November Funding Focus Newsletter #1
What is a Limited Submission?
A limited submission solicitation (RFA, RFP, etc.) places a cap on the number of proposals that Auburn may submit to a sponsor. Auburn coordinates limited submissions by sending out a notification via this newsletter and creating competitions in the Auburn University Competition Space (also known as InfoReady). To apply to any limited submission posted in this newsletter, click on the link below and search for your competition listed on the page. Please refer to the Limited Submission Procedures page for a general list of requirements. However, it is recommended that you go to the specific competition as soon as possible and review the requirements to ensure that you are preparing what is requested since the required information for competitions may vary.

BARDA Industry Day (BID) is an annual, two-day virtual conference featuring presentations from BARDA and our industry and interagency partners on the ongoing collective efforts to support continued innovation and advancement in medical countermeasure (MCM) development and preparedness against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats, pandemic influenza and emerging infectious diseases. This event includes a networking hub between public and private sectors within the health security space, offering many opportunities for attendee-to-attendee engagement.

GRAD 8200 will be offered again in Spring 2023. This class is an excellent opportunity for graduate students to expand their understanding of the Responsible Conduct of Research. This class also helps satisfy NSF’s new RCR education requirementsCould you promote this class in your newsletter?

Advantages to faculty, students who have taken this course:
  • have a deeper understanding of RCR practices,
  • are more informed about appropriate research conduct, and
  • are able to function within the boundaries of research integrity more independently which can reduce some of the burden on faculty mentors.

Hanover Research Funding Calendars

Hanover Research has put together several specialized funding calendars that include federal funders, foundations, descriptions of the programs and the associated deadlines.

Tiger Tips is a series of short articles that provide guidance on a specific topic of interest related to sponsored projects. These articles are intended to serve as a resource for Auburn project directors, administrators and departmental staff who are involved in the management and/or administration of sponsored projects. The most recent article is about the AU Libraries "Send Us Your CV" Program.

Auburn subscribes to several training modules via the CITI Program website that may be of interest to researchers and research administrators. Each module is self-paced and can be finished in one or multiple sessions. Click on the link above to read descriptions.

Funding Opportunities

The Gulf Research Program (GRP) is accepting applications from academic and research institutions for projects that develop or augment models of the potential impacts of multiple, interacting climate hazards on local environmental health disparities. This funding opportunity seeks to advance the understanding of climate hazard (e.g. extreme heat, sea level rise, flooding and extreme weather events) effects on communities that are overburdened by environmental hazards (e.g., heat-related stress, air and water contaminants).

This funding opportunity will support projects within the GRP’s focus regions that:
  1. Investigate and model interactions of multiple climate hazards (e.g., extreme temperatures and weather events, flooding, sea level rise) on localized environmental hazards (e.g. human exposure to air and water contaminants) using existing and publically-available data; and
  2. Project the resulting environmental health disparities (lower life expectancy, higher risk of asthma and cancer, increased exposure to food-borne and vector-borne illness) under varying scenarios and near, mid, and long-term timeframes.

Application Window Extended to November 18, 2022 5:00 pm ET

As energy costs rise and natural disasters become more frequent, humanities organizations - such as museums, libraries, archives, historic sites, and colleges and universities - face an enormous task: to anticipate operational, physical, and financial impacts of climate-related events on their institutions, while also reducing their own impact on the environment. Climate Smart Humanities Organizations supports these efforts by offering federal matching funds for comprehensive organizational assessments that lead to strategic climate action and adaptation plans.

Through the Climate Smart program, a humanities organization can undertake activities such as energy audits, risk assessments, and meetings with consultants. The resulting climate smart plan helps you establish goals and prioritize actions that reduce your organization’s impacts on the environment through mitigation and vulnerability from extreme events through adaptation. Together, mitigation and adaptation can inform a robust road map that addresses climate challenges, protects assets, and facilitates collaboration between internal and external stakeholders. Strategic planning for climate change is an essential part of sustaining humanities organizations’ operations and activities—becoming climate smart.

Individual organizations can apply for themselves or lead a consortium of organizations collaborating on strategic climate smart planning. Awards in this program are made with federal matching funds and require fundraising of third-party, non-federal gifts at a ratio of one to one.

The Armed Forces Pest Management Board (AFPMB), an agency of the Department of Defense (DoD), is soliciting pre-proposals for original and innovative research designed to develop new interventions for protection of deployed military personnel from diseases caused by arthropod-borne pathogens and to improve control of bed bugs and filth flies. Diseases of significant concern include Lyme disease, malaria, dengue fever and other arboviruses. The program supports development of: (1) new toxicants or the adaptation of existing toxicants to medically relevant pests; (2) new insecticide application techniques; (3) new personal protection tools that prevent human-vector contact; (4) decision support tools and (5) novel vector surveillance tools that focus on improved control outcomes.

Pre-Proposals Due: December 8, 2022 11:59 pm ET

The EPA GMD is announcing a Request for Applications (RFA) from applicants to demonstrate technologies, approaches and strategies to reduce nutrient pollution. This must include demonstrations (see definition here) of innovative technologies and/or conservation projects that have the potential to reduce excess nutrient loads. This may also include the development and use of innovative approaches or strategies to overcome barriers to adoption of the most effective and efficient ways to reduce nutrient loading.

Applications must address a nutrient reduction demonstration project with a plan for proof of concept in one of the following areas:
  • Improving Habitat to Reduce Nutrient Pollution: Projects to enhance or restore riparian and near coastal areas in rural, urban, and suburban communities to reduce nutrients.
  • Managing Urban Runoff: Projects to capture, store, filter, and treat runoff to reduce nutrient loads and improve water quality consistent with a broader strategy for watershed protection or restoration.
  • Farmer to Farmer: Projects to reduce nutrient loads while enhancing performance of working lands through conservation practices and to advance the adoption of nutrient management through farmer-led outreach and education networks.

To be eligible for this funding opportunity, projects must take place in one or more of the five Gulf states (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida) AND be within the Gulf of Mexico watershed.
