“I went on and saw a fat old toad by a clod. All along the way I kept hearing voices. Little leaves were whispering, “Come, petite Françoise,” over in the lane.”

Opal Whitely and Her Diary Fragments
|
This photograph, taken around 1919 by Bachrach, depicts Opal Whitely in the process of reassembling her diary that had been ripped into thousands of pieces by a “jealous foster sister.”
Ellery Sedgwick published extracts from the reconstructed journal in serial form in the Atlantic Monthly. The story was later printed in book form. The drafts of the story printed in the Atlantic are in the Ellery Sedgwick Papers, and the MHS also holds a copy of the printed story in full, The Story of Opal: The Journal of an Understanding Heart.
View the photograph up close and read more of the story here.
