Industry News

Following the CDC's decision on Friday to relax masking policies for a majority of the country, travel groups from around the industry called on the Biden administration to do the same for travel.
The CDC's new recommendations do not change the requirement to wear masks on public transportation and indoors in airports, train stations and bus stations.

After almost two years of lockdowns and restrictions, the pandemic has given many people the unique opportunity to get back to their roots, try new things and find new – or even rediscover past – hobbies. This is hardly surprising though, with numerous lockdowns offering little other than an increased amount of free time and encouragement from the government to keep ourselves fit and healthy.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine will ripple throughout the airline industry, most immediately through high oil prices and airspace closures. But if the West and Russia trade sanctions and restrictions, easy flights between North America, Europe, and Asia could be a thing of the past.
Meetings & Events

Tune into Brett Sterenson of Hotel Lobbyists as he discusses event contract changes, growing meeting volume and other trends in this sector.

Planners are frustrated with hotels. More than 55 percent grouse about higher rates and F&B prices, according to the latest Northstar/Cvent Meetings Industry PULSE Survey. And 48 percent complain about inflexible contract terms.

In 2022: Ready for Business Meetings & Events, a free eHandbook, learn about some key 2021 in-person meeting industry events and why industry leaders are excited about what the future holds for in-person meetings and events.
Accommodations & Hospitality

Cheryl Williams explains why some travelers prefer independent hotels. “More than ever, today’s traveler wants experiences that go far beyond what they already know, seeking opportunities to learn about new cultures, expand their perspectives, and witness something that Instagram photos could never do justice to.”

Hotels like the Graduate Roosevelt Island in New York are investing in art and designing unique social spaces and food and beverage concepts to stand out and draw more visitors from regional and drive-to markets.

Confronting a protracted labor shortage, hoteliers have struggled to maintain standard operations, much less meet new demands that the pandemic has produced.
Arts & Culture

Little Free Art Galleries are popping up along the Route 1 corridor, with locations now in University Park, Edmonston and Brentwood. The small box-sized installations, which feature tiny artworks submitted by the public, are the latest trend in the “little free” movement that has brought community-run libraries and food pantries to the area as well.

At miXt, just over the D.C. border in Brentwood, your sniffer might send you to Spice Kitchen from Nigerian American Chef Olumide Shokunbi. Almost all the dishes offered, including some sizzling wings, are dusted with a nut-based spice blend from West Africa that typically coats beef skewers called suya.
