Homecoming 'CARNIV-OWL'
FAU's John D. MacArthur Campus at Jupiter celebrated Homecoming week on Tuesday, Oct.17 with the annual Carniv-OWL event. Faculty, staff, students and family members converged on the recreation fields, which had been transformed into a fall carnival, complete with games, music, funnel cakes, arts and crafts, tacos – and even a zip line. The event was co-hosted by Jupiter Campus Life and Jupiter Academic Affairs.

New Leader for FAU's Biotech Bridge
FAU's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science recently appointed Shailaja Allani, Ph.D., associate scientist in its Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, as the director of the Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (CMBB) and the newly named FAU Biotech Bridge program. FAU Biotech Bridge aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry.

Insomniac Fish?
The Mexican tetra is a freshwater fish found in Northeastern Mexico. Thousands of years ago, the species was permanently separated into two distinct habitats: pitch dark caves and sunlit rivers. Cut off from light, the cave-dwelling tetra have become a favorite species of scientists, including Erik Duboué, Ph.D., associate professor of biology at FAU's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College.
Duboué set out to understand the sleep patterns – or lack thereof – of the Mexican tetra. He found that these “insomniac fish” give valuable insights into the core purpose of sleep.

Jumpstart Postdoctoral Program
The Jumpstart Postdoctoral Program aims to stimulate synergy between faculty and postdoctoral associates and encourage greater multidisciplinary collaboration. The program provides opportunities for postdocs and faculty to engage in multidisciplinary research that addresses societally relevant problems. This is an ideal opportunity for faculty interested in starting a new collaboration and supporting early career scientists. Application deadline is Friday, Jan. 5, 2024.

Join the NeuroSquad Team
The NeuroSquad team from FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute will participate in the upcoming community walk to support the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Palm Beach County. The event is Saturday, Nov. 4 at John Prince Park in Lake Worth Beach. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K walk begins at 9 a.m.
Proceeds from the walk support NAMI Palm Beach County, a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to providing education, support and advocacy with the goal to empower individuals living with mental illnesses and their families, and to eliminate the stigma associated with brain illness.

Meet Alexandra Paz, Ph.D.
Alexandra “Aly” Paz, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral fellow working with the Advancing STEM-Community Engagement through Neuroscience Discovery (ASCEND) program at FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute. Paz earned her doctorate in Integrative Biology in Neuroscience from FAU. Her interest in neuroscience stems from a curiosity about the connection between neurological processes and animal behavior. Paz discovered her passion for neuroscience education while volunteering for the ASCEND program. Now a full-time member of the ASCEND team, Paz supports the program’s communication and community outreach efforts, unraveling the complexities of neuroscience to inspire young people to take an interest in STEM.

Synaptic Popcorn Cinema
Synaptic Popcorn is a new science and culture series at FAU Jupiter led by Rodrigo Pena, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. The events tie themes of neuroscience and artificial intelligence to movies. Each installment in the series matches a film to a research study. Attendees are encouraged to read the study ahead of the movie. Following each screening is a discussion led by Pena and other faculty.
Synaptic Popcorn is an opportunity to take complex neuroscientific research out of the lab and the classroom and make it accessible to everyone.
All events begin at 5 p.m. in AD 119, Jupiter campus.

Andre Dubus III is author of acclaimed novels including “House of Sand and Fog,” (a No. 1 New York Times bestseller that was adapted into an Academy Award-nominated motion picture), “The Garden of Last Days,” and his memoir, “Townie.” In total, Dubus has authored eight books for which he has received such accolades as a finalist for the National Book Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship and an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature. His books are published in more than 25 languages. He currently teaches full time at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
