Call for Applications: HFES Science Policy Fellowship Program
The HFES Science Policy Fellowship (SPF) program provides a valuable opportunity for HFES members to learn how to successfully advocate for human factors and ergonomics on the national stage. SPF Participants will receive extensive training in public affairs, advocacy and outreach to be provided by Lewis-Burke Associates and the HFES Government Relations Committee during the HFES Annual Meeting. They will also participate in an annual spring Capitol Hill Day in Washington, D.C., including a Hill visit training session and a policy-related speaker prior to the visit day. They will be invited to attend monthly conference calls covering ongoing events and opportunities for HFES to engage in policy decisions.
Successful applicants should be members of HFES (Associate or Full) for at least five years. Applicants are invited to provide a one-page statement of interest, a current C.V. that includes the applicant’s name and both home and business addresses, and a letter of support from their employer to participate. Successful applicants must be eligible to vote in the United States.

Call for Papers: Special Section of Human Factors: the Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society On Assessment and Effectiveness of Driver Monitoring Systems
Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) aim to assess in real-time the state of the driver, including their physiological and attentional state. They are designed to detect the onset of detrimental conditions like distraction and drowsiness, and alert the driver if their attention or vigilance levels fall below set safety thresholds. The introduction of effective and accurate DMS is expected to drastically reduce the number of collisions caused by human error, with at least 140,000 fewer serious injuries expected in the European Union alone by 2038.
The deadline to submit a paper is December 19, 2022.

AHRQ Announces New R18 Funding Opportunity: "Diagnostic Centers of Excellence: Partnerships to Improve Diagnostic Safety and Quality"
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is pleased to announce the publication of a new R18 funding opportunity announcement (RFA-HS-22-008) entitled “Diagnostic Centers of Excellence: Partnerships to Improve Diagnostic Safety and Quality (R18).”
In medicine, a diagnosis is a judgment identifying the cause of a disease or condition in a patient and has a critical role in treatment considerations and forecasting. Currently, high levels of variance in clinical diagnostic practice are associated with error, which may lead to patient harm. The role of a Diagnostic Centers of Excellence (DCE) is to perfect a component of diagnostic care in an integrated cross-disciplinary health system. Each DCE will develop expertise in one or two focus areas of diagnostic improvement. There are four areas of focus:
Two of the areas of focus are aligned with frontline diagnostician support:
1) Safety-I error detection and prevention
2) Safety-II resilience for safe practice.
Two additional areas of focus are aligned with improving diagnostic systems:
3) improving diagnostic precision through consensus
4) improving “truth” or diagnostic reference standards.
It is anticipated that the synthesis of the collective findings and experience of the funded DCEs will cover all four of these focus areas, and ideally will result in fewer diagnostic errors and will improve safe diagnostic care.

Now Accepting Nominations for the 2022 Executive Council Election
All eligible voting HFES members are encouraged to participate in this year’s nominations and election process. We are seeking nominations for President-Elect, Secretary-Treasurer-Elect, and two Members-at-Large of the Executive Council.
A minimum number of nominations is required in order for one to be eligible to appear on the ballot. Those minimums are:
- Five for President-Elect
- Three for Secretary-Treasurer-Elect
- Three for Executive Council Member-at-Large-Elect
Among those who are eligible, those who receive the most nominations will appear on the ballot as follows:

President-Elect and for Secretary-Treasurer-Elect: The three persons who receive the greatest number of nominations

For At-Large Executive Council: The six persons who received the greatest number of nominations
Please confirm with those you plan to nominate that they are willing to be nominated and encourage your nominee(s) to acquire as many nominations as possible to increase their likelihood of making it onto the election ballot.

Human Factor Prize Submission Site Opens May 13
The Human Factors Prize was established in 2010 by Editor-in-Chief William S. Marras. The prize recognizes excellence in HF/E research through an annual competition in which authors are invited to submit papers on a specific topic for that year. The prize carries a $5,000 cash award and consideration of publication of the winning paper in the Society's journal, Human Factors. The award is formally conferred at a special session at the HFES International Annual Meeting, where the recipient presents their work.
The topic for the 2022 Human Factors Prize Competition is: Equity and Inclusivity Eligibility
Submissions must cover original (unpublished) research in the topical area and comply with the requirements in the Human Factors Information for Authors. Review articles are not eligible for the Prize. Any researcher is eligible to submit relevant work; membership in HFES is not required. Review of submissions will be based on originality, significance, sophistication, and completeness of the work.
The winning submission is peer reviewed and considered for publication in Human Factors.

Call for Volunteers: Citation of Standards and Best Practices in HFES Publications
Many times over the years, HFES members have told the Executive Council, both directly and in surveys, that connecting the research in HFES publications with practice is a struggle. There are many ways this translation, a strategic goal, could be accomplished. One of them is require that HFES publications cite relevant standards, best practices, etc. This citation requirement only makes sense if relevant standards and best practices can be found. Therefore: Given the educational resources to be provided, can candidate authors of HFES publications (and reviewers of them) find standards/best practices, etc. relevant to an article they are writing (or could write or review)?
We are seeking volunteers from the Society to examine the educational resources that are available to help people find standards. We provide resources to get volunteers started including a report, “Getting Research Into Practice via Standards”. Other resources may be examined as well. Volunteers should select two articles from an HFES Publication (e.g., the Journal, the Proceedings and find the standards / best practices / etc. that are relevant to each of the two articles you examined. A sample reporting template is provided.)

Call for Applications: The Annual Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award
Submissions are open for the Foundation for Professional Ergonomics’ (FPE) Dieters W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award. The purpose of the award is to advance professionalism in Ergonomics by recognizing educational activities that demonstrate how professional ergonomists serve to make our lives at work and at home healthier, safer, more productive, and more satisfying. This award is open to ALL students (graduate and undergraduate) in Ergonomics and Ergonomics-related programs. Students who have completed their degrees in the past year are also eligible.
The deadline to apply for the annual Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award is June 30, 2022.

Call for Volunteers: HFE WOMAN Awards Committee
Human Factors and Ergonomics Women’s Organization for Mentorship and Networking (HFE WOMAN) is looking for volunteers to serve on their awards committee. Committee members should be mid-to-late career HFES members from academia, industry or government. Duties include reviewing nomination packages and attending meetings via telecom or video chat.
This committee will meet several times over the next few months in preparation for the HFES Annual Meeting in October.

In Memoriam
It is with heavy heart that we make mention the passing of Dr. Gregory A. Garrett on February 5, 2022. Dr. Garrett was a Senior Systems Engineer in Human Factors & Ergonomics for the Boeing Company’s Defense, Space, & Security (BDS) Division (business unit). He began his career with Boeing’s Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) organization in 2016 as an ergonomist. During his time with Boeing, Greg, was known for his successes in project accomplishments and awards. He was also one of a handful of Professors of Practice for the Virginia Tech University’s David Calhoun Honors Discover Program. His time at Boeing was valued and cherished and in his memory live those that were considered as his friends, colleagues, mentors, and mentees. Greg was a graduate of Texas A&M University (DrPH in Environmental & Occupational Health) and Middle Tennessee State University (MA in Experimental Psychology; BS in Exercise Science). At HFES, Greg was the Aerospace Systems Technical Group Chair-Elect (2021-2022) and was also the Recruitment Chair for the Boeing HFES Partners Program.
