North Shore Jewish Center Cemetery Restoration Project

B'nai Mitzvah Project

Introduction/Project Summary:

In October 2022, the B’nai Mitzvah class of North Shore Jewish Center began work on a project to beautify the synagogue’s cemetery section at Washington Memorial Park in Mount Sinai, New York. As time went on, the class also began to collect and learn about the information contained on the gravestones (names, dates, symbols, inscriptions) and how that information can be used to help Jewish families research their ancestry. As a result, the class also started to catalog information about the gravestones, including birth and death dates and photos, and make it available to the synagogue in a spreadsheet that can be updated and shared.
