Dietrich Deep Dives: Increasing Vaccination Rates with Text Nudges
Silvia Saccardo, assistant professor in the Department of Social and Decision Sciences, will discuss her work using text messages to increase vaccine rates. She shows how messages that include “ownership” language were the most effective at getting participants to sign up and show up for their vaccination appointments. Join Saccardo for her talk on Feb. 1 at 4:30 p.m. Eastern.

Faculty Spotlight: Uju Anya
The Faculty Spotlight series features new and junior faculty at the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. Uju Anya, associate professor of Second Language Acquisition, is the inaugural faculty member featured in this series. Anya joined the Department of Modern Languages in 2021. Her work examines race, gender and sexual and social class identities in new language learning through the multilingual journeys of African American students.

Children’s Books Solidify Gender Stereotypes in Young Minds
A new study from Molly Lewis, special faculty in the Social and Decision Sciences and Psychology departments at CMU, and her colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has found children’s books may perpetuate gender stereotypes.

Phi Beta Kappa Inducts Newest Class of Dietrich Students
Fifteen students have been selected for early initiation into Carnegie Mellon University’s chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, including eight students affiliated with the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The initiation ceremony will be held in the Posner Center on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. Eastern. The event is open to the campus community.
