Dear Member, Supporter, Stakeholder,
Ten days on from the blizzard that hit us last week, and we have a few updates to the project we are now calling 'Raising the Roof'.
Firstly we would like to say a huge thank you to the volunteers that made it out on Tuesday to start work on the significant block of snow that had accumulated on the west end of the dome and the cause of it's partial collapse. Staff and volunteers worked from sunrise to sundown to clear the debris and made a dent in what will be a much bigger task. In sub-zero temperatures and with a bit of sunshine we were able to clear away the main area for repair and have now had site visits from the contractor expected to work on this project. As the Pickering Soccer Centre is a city owned facility that Pickering FC operates on their behalf we are working closely with City staff at all levels to begin the process of our rebuild. This week saw two independent assessments of the work and next week we expect to see a timeline for this work to be carried out.
|
|
A key part of this rebuild will be the removal of all snow across the significant expanse of our full-field dome. With further snow fall expected this weekend and next week we want to manage this workload and the foot traffic across the surface in a safe and methodical manner. We love the many offers of help to volunteer removing the snow but we want to make sure we don't burn our volunteers out, or put them at risk. Next week we will have a better picture of what we can do safely and when.

What is crucial to the Pickering FC Board and staff is the ongoing operation of our Club programs. So much great work has been done while battling through the last 21 months of this terrible pandemic, and we don't want to lose that momentum now. With the provincial restrictions partially lifting as of January 31st we know players and coaches want to be back together training and playing. With that in mind Club staff have worked all week to identify as many facilities and time slots in the City, the Region and the GTA where we can viably run our programs. Coaches were all online Monday evening to hear first hand about the Clubs next steps from Past President Corrado Roccasalva and to prepare for the next phase of indoor training. The City of Pickering have been a great help opening up time at the newly refurbished Pickering Recreation Centre as well as the East Shore Community Centre to primarily service our Recreational programs, with Development and Competitive programs training in various locations outside the Region. Families will be hearing very soon from their Head Coach regarding training times and locations. This will get us through what we hope will be a short 6-week period. Before we know it Spring will be here and we can access outdoor turf fields and make up any missed sessions.
As this is a very active situation we will continue to provide updates to program registrants as they become available.

On Wednesday we held what was now our second Annual General Meeting in a virtual format. It was fantastic to see so many attendees on the screen and possibly our best turn out in the past 10 years! Among the agenda items we; presented on the key achievements and challenges of the 2020-2021 year, heard from Acting President Ed Whitehead on the clubs status, approved two new by-law changes and, elected a new, restructured board! None of these developments happen without the great work and effort put in by the Club Staff and Coaches, but just as importantly the AGM is a time to recognise the effort and oversight of the PFC Board. We said goodbye to two board members who, while not running for re-election, will still be seen regularly around the Club. Former Boys Competitive Director Barry who will now focus his energies on the Boys 2006 program and former Recreational Director Lisa who will spend more time with family and her women's recreational team. Thank you to both Lisa and Barry for their priceless commitment to PFC.
The elected PFC Board for 2021-2022 is:
- President - Ed Whitehead
- Vice President - John Antonopoulos
- Immediate Past President - Corrado Roccasalva
- Secretary - Roz Lavoie
-
Treasurer - Vacant
- Grassroots, Competitive, & High Performance - Warren Hutchinson
-
Recreational, All Abilities, & Community - Vacant
-
Marketing & Sponsorship - Vacant
- Facility & Strategy - Corrado Roccasalva

Our first PFC All Abilities book is now available!
Author and illustrator Anusha Broekhuyse joined us as a volunteer at the height of the pandemic, assisting with our virtual soccer programming. She then brought her love of our program to the field and joined us this summer as an All Abilities Coach.
We uncovered Anusha's amazing artistic talent which lead her to writing "Logan Learns to Play". She used her visual art skills to illustrate the enjoyment, fears, and challenges that youth living with disabilities face on a daily basis and hopes that this book will help inspire more children living with intellectual and/or physical disabilities to participate in sports.
Anusha is donating ALL proceeds of book purchases back to our All Abilities Program. "Logan Learns to Play" can be purchased from the front desk at the Pickering Soccer Centre for $15.00. You may also click the link below to purchase the book directly through Amazon.
