Construction Update

June 19, 2024

Current Activities

Crews continue preparations for the soil nail wall. A soil nail wall reinforces the stability of the existing ground on unstable slopes by placing closely spaced steel bars (soil nails) and then applying a concrete mixture called shotcrete. Due to the steep terrain and narrow area for the truck escape ramp, this type of wall is ideal for this area. Photo below shows machinery at work placing materials for the soil nail wall.

Work Hours: Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Fall 2024.

Traffic Advisory

Alternating one-way traffic is now in effect and controlled by temporary traffic signals around the clock. Be prepared to stop. Expect delays of up to 20 minutes. Remember not to stop or park between the two temporary signals.

Be alert for stopped vehicles in your lane and be prepared for reduced speeds due to narrowed lanes and limited visibility. Maintain a safe following distance and adhere to the posted speed limit.

Project Background

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is constructing a new truck escape ramp on Powder Mountain Road (SR-158) west of Powder Mountain Resort. This system utilizes a series of cable nets to stop runaway trucks, providing drivers with a safe alternative in the event they lose their brakes while descending the steep canyon.
