New Study Reveals 'Pathogen' Storm

Researchers from FAU and collaborators recently published a new study that uncovered a connection between Sargassum, plastic marine debris and Vibrio bacteria that could have important implications for marine life and public health. Vibrio bacteria are found in waters around the world and are the dominant cause of death in humans from the marine environment. Data collected in the study found that Vibrio bacteria can “stick” to the microplastics that have permeated the ocean. Sargassum is free-living populations of brown macroalga (seaweed). The combination of Sargassum and plastic debris, particularly when it's piled on the beach, was discovered to be a haven for Vibrio bacteria. Tracy Mincer, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology at FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, is the corresponding lead author on the study.

“I don’t think at this point, anyone has really considered these microbes and their capability to cause infections,” Mincer said. “We really want to make the public aware of these associated risks. In particular, caution should be exercised regarding the harvest and processing of Sargassum biomass until the risks are explored more thoroughly.”

STEM Education Outreach

NeuroExplorers Spring 2023 Graduation

On May 10, middle school students participating in FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institutes' ASCEND NeuroExplorers after-school program graduated as "Junior Neuroscientists."

Advancing STEM-Community Engagement through Neuroscience Discovery (ASCEND) was founded in 2018 to address the national shortage in STEM career-oriented students. ASCEND’s NeuroExplorers program is a semester-long neuroscience course covering topics ranging from comparative neuroanatomy to neural networks and brain disorders. Classes are led by postdoctoral and graduate neuroscientists from the Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute, Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and Wertheim UF Scripps Institute through a combination of hands-on activities, scientific experiments and thought-provoking discussions. Students come from across Palm Beach County and beyond to participate in the program.

Berean Christian Academy Visit

A class of science students from Berean Christian Academy visited the laboratory of Lucia Carvelli, Ph.D., in FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute. Andre Rajoo, an alumnus of Berean and a senior lab member of the Carvelli laboratory, coordinated the tour. The students learned about the neuroscience research being conducted in the Carvelli lab and about Rajoo’s research for his senior thesis. They took an in-depth tour of the institute, including the Nikon Microscopy Center of Excellence. After a day at FAU Jupiter, one Berean student who had recently been accepted to FAU officially committed to attending the university in the fall.
