Groundbreaking Treatment for Brain Disorders
Delray Medical Center and FAU’s Institute for Human Health and Disease Intervention (I-Health) recently worked together in a collaborative FDA-approved clinical trial using focused ultrasound technology, a new tool in the medical field.
The ultrasound is used to cross the blood-brain barrier to treat Alzheimer's disease and similar brain disorders. Read more.

Undergraduate Researcher of the Year
Steven Shatkhin, an undergraduate student in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, recently earned the Researcher of the Year Award from FAU's Office of Undergraduate Research.
Shatkhin's work uses mouse models to identify novel mechanisms that might contribute to neuropsychiatric disease risk. His mentors are Adele Stewart, Ph.D., research assistant professor, College of Medicine, and Randy Blakely, Ph.D., executive director, FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute. Learn more.

Empowering Students as Community Changemakers
The Kenan Social Engagement Program at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University announced the 2023 scholarship recipients. The funds help launch social ventures the students conceptualized and planned in the Fall 2022 semester in a social entrepreneurship course taught by program co-directors Timothy Steigenga, Ph.D., professor of political science and Christopher Strain, Ph.D., professor of American studies, both at the Honors College.
Winners include, from left:
- Mariam Rizvi for her venture to address the educational crisis in South Asia, where women and girls experience significant educational barriers.
- Lauren Reynolds to fund her venture to address the lack of easy access to quality mental healthcare for adolescents.
- Gabby Ruiz for her idea to design a venture that provides proper veterinary care to pets adopted during the pandemic.

Let's Play Ball
Julie Pilitsis, Ph.D., MD, center, threw the opening pitch at the FAU Health Day at the Marlins and Cardinals Spring training game at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, Jupiter, in early March.
Pilitsis is the dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and vice president for Medical Affairs and professor of neurosurgery at Florida Atlantic University.

Community Foundation Luncheon
Randy Blakely, Ph.D., executive director, FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute, was the keynote speaker at the 10th annual founder's luncheon of the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin counties.
In his presentation, titled, "A Path to Better Brain Health: Hope From My Family to Yours," Blakely discussed advancing solutions for brain disorders.

Walking for Autism
FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute (SNBI) raised more than $1,000 to support autism research, education and service during the annual Autism Speaks Walk in West Palm Beach, Fla.
The SNBI Neurosquad team, which provides hands on neuroscience experiences for youth, walked in partnership with FAU Center for Autism and Related Disabilities as part of the Brainy Days program.

Brainy Days Finale
The monthlong Brainy Days celebration concluded with an educational event called "When Science Links with the Arts: Research and Alternative Therapies for Parkinson’s and Other Neurodegenerative Diseases.”
Featured speakers included Beth Elgort, Mind, Music and Movement Foundation; Randy, Blakely, Ph.D., executive director, FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute; Julie Pilitsis, Ph.D., MD, FAU College of Medicine; and Henriette van Praag, Ph.D., Brain Institute. The event included a special performance by the Voices of Parkinson’s Chorus, as well as movement, dance and meditation demonstrations.
Mind, Music, & Movement Foundation for Neurological Disorders, classes are slated to begin late spring at the Brain Institute. The classes include dance for fluidity, yoga and movement.
