“Her sympathies were constantly affected, and her charities actively exercised, in behalf of the poor, the outcast, and the oppressed, without regard to color or race.”

Catherine Sargent, miniature portrait by Catherine Negus
|
Catherine Sargent (1774–1852) was an active abolitionist from Gloucester, Mass., and friend of William Lloyd Garrison and his family. He wrote in her obituary for The Liberator, “the cause of the stricken slave, and of all identified with him by complexion, has lost one of its truest and best friends.” In this portrait by Caroline Negus, Sargent is in her sixties.
Negus, a miniaturist and crayon artist, was born into a family of painters. She exhibited paintings at the Boston Artist’s Association, the National Academy, and the Boston Athenaeum.
