“Fill high!—fill high the festive bowl
To Him, on whom the mantle falls;
And let the lofty chorus roll
Around these consecrated walls.
Thou! the Chosen—grace the helm;
ADAMS! rule—and serve the realm.”

Adams Ode. For the Fourth of March 1825
|
On 4 March 1825, John Quincy Adams was inaugurated as President of the United States. On that same day, Bostonians celebrated Adams’s inauguration with artillery salutes, flag displays, dinners, balls, illuminations, bonfires, and a special dinner at Faneuil Hall attended by 500 Bostonians. After dinner several toasts and odes were made, including “Adams Ode. For the Fourth of March 1825” by Charles Sprague (1791–1875), Boston banker and poet.

Judges spend the morning learning about a wide range of historical topics, listening to student historians, and supporting local schools. All you need to be a judge is a love of history—no experience or special knowledge needed! Click here to learn more and to sign up to be a judge!

This conference is part of a series of interdisciplinary and international meetings designed to reexamine the origins, course, and consequences of the American Revolution. 2023–2024 Seminar Season: Call for Papers
The MHS organizes seven seminar series from September to May. These sessions bring together a diverse group of scholars and interested members of the public to workshop a pre-circulated paper. After brief remarks from the author and an assigned commentator, the discussion is opened to the floor. Seminar attendees are encouraged to ask questions, provide feedback on the circulated essay, and discuss the topic at hand. Our sessions are free and open to everyone.
