“Have you seen the Nightingale?”: The Triumphant American Tour of Jenny Lind
Jenny Lind was a Swedish opera singer, nicknamed “The Nightingale.” She was immensely popular in Europe, prompting P.T. Barnum to fund a US tour for her in 1850. Barnum’s marketing led to Jenny Lind craze in America. Her face appeared on many types of merchandise, such as the change purse pictured above, and newspapers covered her phenomenon.

Our galleries and the library are open Monday, and Wednesday through Friday, from 10:00 AM to 4:45 PM, Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 7:45 PM, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. For closures, visit our hours and admissions page.
