Rebuild Restore Renew

“Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, when you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God’s help.” This is the second of the five promises we make in the renewal of our Baptismal covenant, and it contains several very rich and powerful words: Persevere – Resist – Evil – Fall – Sin – Repent – Return. This promise recognizes that our Baptismal covenant is a life-long promise, a life-long commitment, to resist the evil that permeates our broken world. And this promise is a constant and on-going “renewal”, because notice, it doesn’t say “if you fall into sin…”, it says “whenyou fall into sin.” And it will happen countless times, we can count on it!The stage is then set for the endless battle of our “persistence and resistance” to be renewed again and again.

Now this is not a “trip and fall” into sin. My Apple watch will tell me instantly if I accidentally trip and fall over a bump in the sidewalk, and it will ask me if I’m OK or should my watch (for goodness sakes!) call 911. But if I “fall” headlong into the deep end of my pool through my own volition, my watch won’t call anyone, it will just get wet.Evil is in the world, and we must always be on our guard, but we often sin through our own deliberate fault, as we are bold to confess “we have sinned against you and against our neighbor,in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault.”

The late M. Scott Peck,in his book, People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil, the author and psychiatrist defined evil as “that which kills or suppresses life or the life force,” and he says that it often disguises itself in a “mask of self-righteousness,” a “narcissistic self-image that denies and refuses to acknowledge any personal flaws”, but instead “manipulating” or “scapegoating” others. In other words, in our self-righteousness and need to preserve our self-image, we deceive ourselves into believing that we are incapable of doing horrendous evil given the right circumstances. But St. John reminds us in his first letter that “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not inn us.” That’s why in our Baptismal covenant we promise to “repent and return to the Lord.” It is a daily struggle of renewal and resistance of our faith, but our hope is in the Lord, or as Dr. Peck would say, “The War against Evil has been won. We are now just in a mopping up operation.” We need to be persistent about it through the continued renewal of our Baptismal promise. For St. John does not leave us comfortless: “But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

And all of God’s people said……..

Prayer Card

Months ago our Parish Administrator, Ann Gillinger, was sharing with us all the prayer ministries that went on at Prince of Peace. That list was impressive. Several weeks ago, our Sr. Warden, Carol Barker introduced the congregation to another prayer ministry by sharing with us a very simple “Prayer Card.”

The idea behind the “card” is that prayer is something unique to the church. It is a tool we are called to use for ourselves but also on behalf of others. The card states very clearly “we will pray for you/or whomever needs prayers, with no strings attached.” There is simple contact information (ways you can get your prayer request to the church) for us to pray.

These cards are a tool that you can use to share with others that pray is available to them and for those they love. Pick up a few cards after worship and share them with family, friends or other “neighbors.” If you are still not physically worshiping with us at Prince of Peace let us know that you would like some of the prayer cards and we will send them to you via mail.

Children and Family Ministry:

This is the last week of the 2021-2022 Sunday School year. We especially thank all our dedicated and loving teachers (intentional shepherds!):

Each of these children’s ministers is important to this ministry. We share their stories in coming Happenings summer articles so you will get to know them!

Our word for this week is WISDOM. In Proverbs 8, we will listen to Wisdom who will tell us she was with God when God made everything! We will end this school year with a prayer walk around our campus, thanking and praising God for His awesome wisdom, power, and love. We invite you to celebrate with us with an Ice Cream Sundae on the patio!
