Merchant and Loyalist John Rowe on the Boston Tea Party
John Rowe, a prominent merchant in Boston, kept 12 diaries from 1764 to 1779 that contain details about his daily life, items of news, and occasionally an opinion about that news. In an entry noting the events that took place the evening of 16 December 1773, Rowe describes the weather, feeling unwell, the end of the town meeting, and then the tea being thrown overboard. He bemoans the event, writing “I am sincerely sorry for the Event.” Read a transcription of the diary entry.
