A collaboration between the Florida Atlantic University Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute and Charles E. Schmidt College of Science has resulted in the launch of a unique partnership to train the next generation of brain scientists through the newly announced Neuroscience Graduate Program (NGP). Florida Atlantic University has named Julie G. Pilitsis, M.D., Ph.D., as the new dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. Pilitsis, who currently serves as division chief of functional neurosurgery and chair and professor of the basic neuroscience department at Albany Medical College (AMC) in New York, will assume her role as dean effective February 2022. AMC is an integral component of the Albany Medical Center, the only academic center in northeastern New York and western New England.

The Leon Charney Diplomacy Program at Florida Atlantic University recently competed in the annual diplomacy competition in Washington, D.C., finishing first overall out of 51 competing universities and receiving five delegation awards. To date, the program has won 52 national and international awards for academic excellence and three national titles in the past four years.

The 2021 Henry Morrison Flagler Scholarship recipients got a special look into the Flagler’s impact on Florida history during a recent visit to the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach.
 
The Henry Morrison Flagler Scholarship Program, created by The William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust – a humanitarian, community education-focused charitable organization established by Henry Flagler’s brother-in-law – supports exceptional undergraduate students, from the State of Florida, to attend FAU’s Wilkes Honors College. The scholarship covers room and board as well as tuition and fees, not covered by the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, totaling up to $72,000 over the four-year period. Currently, a total of 20 students have been awarded the scholarship, with five students selected from each academic level, representing various areas of study.

FAU Wilkes Honors College is excited to welcome Bharat Verma, Ph.D., as a faculty member. Verma has advanced training in mathematical programming, including optimization, advanced data analysis, and simulation techniques. He has extensively worked in data driven strategy, consumer behavioral models and digital technologies in Asia and America. Student Spotlight

FAU doctoral student Angelica Downey was awarded $10,000 for her proposal to conduct research on an employment intervention for college students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The Social Security Administration’s Analyzing Relationships between Disability, Rehabilitation and Work (ARDRAW)​​​​​​​ selected Downey as a graduate-level recipient of this one-year stipend to conduct research designed to ferret out innovative and fresh perspectives on disability, specifically rehabilitation, work.

Community Spotlights

MobileMinds, a branch of the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute’s ASCEND (Advancing STEM Community Engagement through Neuroscience Discovery) program, recently visited students in the Biomedical Science choice program at Lake Worth Middle School. This program, in affiliation with FAU's Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, is designed to increase interest in STEM research – a mission parallel to FAU's ASCEND program.

FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute’s “Neurosquad” Strides for Success at NAMI Walk 2021

FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute’s team, “Neurosquad,” participated in the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) Walk on Saturday, Nov. 6 at John Prince Park in Lake Worth, FL. The team completed the 5K walk and fundraised a total of $1,350 for NAMI Palm Beach County and landed a spot as one of the top ten teams for the event.

Leadership Palm Beach County recently hosted their Health and Human Services Day event, sponsored by FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute, and evening reception at FAU Jupiter campus. The theme of the event was Health Across the Lifespan: Birth to 100 and had a full day promoting health, healing and resilience.
 
During the event, participants had the opportunity to hear remarks on transforming brain research in Palm Beach County from Randy Blakely, Ph.D., executive director, and Nicole Baganz, Ph.D., director of community engagement and programming, with FAU's Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute. Campus Update

Building construction continues for the new, state-of-the-art, FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute on the John D. MacArthur Campus at Jupiter. Once completed, this building will provide current and future generations of innovative scientists with a cutting-edge, research and education facility.

Current building progress includes roadway asphalt and sidewalk installation preparation; flooring preparation and tile installation; and preparation for Florida Power & Light (FPL) work to begin.
