The Shadow of Slavery in American Public Life

Places and objects have a way of connecting us viscerally and emotionally with the past. Throughout the United States, there are many sites that bear witness to the nation's history of enslavement, yet in those spaces that history has often been obscured or obliterated. In this lecture, President McInnis will discuss two research projects (one focused on Virginia's role in the American Slave Trade and one focused on slavery at the University of Virginia) and the public engagement that helped make visible the shadows of slavery that had long been hidden.

Maurie McInnis is the sixth president of Stony Brook University, an internationally recognized public research institution and center of academic excellence designated as one of only two flagship universities in New York State and ranked as the number one public university in the state under her leadership. Appointed in July 2020, President McInnis also oversees Stony Brook Medicine, Long Island’s premier academic medical center, which encompasses five health sciences schools, four hospitals, and 200 community-based healthcare settings. She is a key player in furthering economic development on Long Island and in Stony Brook’s role as part of the management team of nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy facility. To propel Stony Brook University to even higher levels of excellence, President McInnis continues to make significant investments that put bold opportunities within reach, advancing the institution’s priorities that include recruiting accomplished faculty, conducting groundbreaking research, providing the best clinical care for patients, and boosting the socioeconomic mobility of all students at Stony Brook University.
