Jeremy Belknap and the First Meeting of the MHS
|
On 24 January 1791, the first meeting of the MHS, then known simply as the Historical Society, took place on Court Street in Boston. Jeremy Belknap—pictured above—and like-minded Bostonians pledged to donate books, manuscripts, and artifacts, and to contribute financially “to rescue the true history of this Country from the ravages of time, & the effects of ignorance & neglect.”

Happy Birthday to the MHS!
Today, the MHS celebrates its 232nd birthday. Our founders understood the importance of collecting, preserving, and communicating materials. We still stand strong in our conviction that historical understanding is critical to creating a better world. Support from our Members enables us to care for our collections and to provide resources that educate, connect, and inspire historical empathy, which fosters civic responsibility. Continue this legacy for generations to come by making a birthday gift to the MHS.
Membership begins with a gift of $250, covers two people, and allows you to enjoy free programs and exclusive events, such as Member Week. Make your gift here. Learn about other ways to make a gift and consider becoming a member of our Visionary Circle by making a planned gift.
