Penelope Royall Vassall, Boston Tory
|
Penelope Royall Vassall was born in Antigua in 1724. Her family moved to Boston in 1737. Her father died two years later, leaving her extensive holdings in Antigua. She married Henry Vassall in 1742 and together they lived in Cambridge. In 1769, she became a widow.
Penelope’s Cambridge home was confiscated as a Tory property during the Revolutionary War, and she went to her family’s estate in Antigua. She returned to Boston after the war and lived in poverty until her death in 1800.
