Dear Member, Stakeholder, Supporter,
As you are no doubt aware our Pickering Soccer Centre came down under the weight of the extreme snowfall on Monday afternoon. The volume of snow, and the speed with which it landed, caused a significant depression in the roof and following advice from our contractors we brought the remainder of the dome down under control. This assisted us in limiting any further damage to the dome walls. Across Ontario, an incredible 18 domed structures came down as a result of the blizzard and specialist dome companies are working frantically to get each of them put back up.
|
|
At this time we are working with numerous City of Pickering departments to restart our operations, especially as we know on-field activity can commence at 50% capacity as of January 31st. We don't expect the dome to be up by that date and as such we are identifying other facility time across Durham Region and the GTA that we can book. The facility building is completely unscathed and still operational for staff, meetings and upcoming fitness sessions in the event room.

We want to sincerely thank those that have offered their time and energy to get us back on our feet. From Sport Durham and Oshawa Kicks, to the parents of our 2010 Girls team, board, staff, coaches, and many others your support is sincerely appreciated. The high-quality finish on our dome exterior means the surface is extremely slippy and even more so with the snow and ice. To ensure everyone's safety PFC Staff will remove the bulk of snow next week in a controlled manner in order for contractors to then repair the holes. For those offering support, we will be in touch once we get to a point when the area is safe - there will still be plenty to do!
We are fortunate to have board members and city staff with experience from the domes launch in November 2014 and their continued collaboration is proving invaluable today as we look to 're-raise the roof'. Soccer will continue as best as possible and staff will continue communicating with players, coaches, referees and families in each of our programs on a regular basis. They will be the first to know about our next steps.
Thank you for your ongoing patience. As a community, we will be closer together as a result of this latest challenge and we commit to keeping you well informed.
|
|
As you can see, while our players, families and staff are locked out of the dome we are still full steam ahead with an imminent restart. Adjustments are being made to schedules, plans and protocols in readiness for our return to the dome. Coaching staff have moved to online team sessions each night of the week and Coach Jamaal is having tremendous success with his 'Get Fit' online fitness session each Thursday evening and Saturday morning with 138 on this weeks session! Great work Coach Jamaal, keep it up!
That effort also extends to our All Abilities and blind soccer program participants who have been meeting each week online to stay connected. Social isolation during these restrictions is hard on us all but even more so on the disabled community. Take a look at these great stories from the past week about the power of our sport and inclusion.

Our first PFC All Abilities book is now available!
Author and illustrator Anusha Broekhuyse joined us as a volunteer at the height of the pandemic, assisting with our virtual soccer programming. She then brought her love of our program to the field and joined us this summer as an All Abilities Coach.
We uncovered Anusha's amazing artistic talent which lead her to writing "Logan Learns to Play". She used her visual art skills to illustrate the enjoyment, fears, and challenges that youth living with disabilities face on a daily basis and hopes that this book will help inspire more children living with intellectual and/or physical disabilities to participate in sports.
Anusha is donating ALL proceeds of book purchases back to our All Abilities Program. "Logan Learns to Play" can be purchased from the front desk at the Pickering Soccer Centre for $15.00. You may also click the link below to purchase the book directly through Amazon.
