Green Macroalga in Indian River Lagoon

Green macroalga has replaced native seagrass in parts of the Northern Indian River Lagoon and the Banana River, according to a new study published by researchers at FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. The macroalga, though also native to the lagoon, acts as an invasive species, taking advantage of the open space left behind when seagrass beds are destroyed by nutrient invasion. Importantly, the macroalga is toxic to manatees, which have turned to it as an alternative food source.

NeuroExplorers Graduation

Twelve junior neuroscientists completed the fall 2023 semester of the NeuroExplorers program. The after-school curriculum is part of FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute's Advancing Stem-Community Engagement through Neuroscience Discovery (ASCEND) program.

Students learned about four neuroscience topics over the course of the semester:

  • Human senses
  • Neurons
  • How chemicals can impact behavior
  • How age impacts locomotion

They worked in groups to produce final projects based on these topics. During the graduation celebration, the students were encouraged to present their findings to their parents, in a similar format to a scientific poster symposium.

The next NeuroExplorers session begins Feb. 9.
