January Funding Focus Newsletter #2
What is a Limited Submission?
A limited submission solicitation (RFA, RFP, etc.) places a cap on the number of proposals that Auburn may submit to a sponsor. Auburn coordinates limited submissions by sending out a notification via this newsletter and creating competitions in the Auburn University Competition Space (also known as InfoReady). To apply to any limited submission posted in this newsletter, click on the link below and search for your competition listed on the page. Please refer to the Limited Submission Procedures page for a list of requirements.

Up to $4,000 may be requested to support an event that involves participants from more than one ORAU member institution, including students. Examples of such events include visits to an ORAU consortium member by a renowned speaker, conferences or workshops with a focused theme, or a technology transfer/business plan competition.
Applications will be accepted for events occurring between May 1 and September 30, 2022.

Institutional Limit: 1 per fiscal year (Oct. 1 - Sept. 30)
Internal Deadline: January 28, 2022 4:45 pm

Suborbital flight can be used as a maturation step from ground-based research to downstream orbital flight research/demonstration or can be used for scientific research that can be accomplished in suborbital flight. Proposals shall state how suborbital flight will influence/mature the results/quality of any prior ground-based research or technology development and will provide insight into how the suborbital flight fits into a larger scientific research or space technology development context, as applicable.

Collaboration between EPSCoR and the STMD FO program will strengthen relationships between the respective communities and build experience and know-how in the EPSCoR community on the availability, usability, and value of U.S.-based commercial suborbital flight services. The partnership will engage the EPSCoR community with commercial suborbital flight providers, as well as open new paths for the jurisdictions to compete for and win larger spaceflight research projects.

There is no requirement that Science/Co PI's be U.S. citizens, however, foreign nationals (e.g., non-U.S. citizens who do not have a green card) will likely not be permitted access to NASA Centers. This may or may not be relevant to the research being proposed. The AU Science-I/Co-I's should propose for $228K (which will be a sub-award from UAH).

Institutional Limit: 1 Proposal
Internal Deadline: January 25, 2022 4:45 pm
Important Updates

The NAPDC is a USDA-NIFA funded effort to convene diverse stakeholders to develop a blueprint for a national data framework to benefit agricultural producers. Key to drafting the blueprint is garnering input from those active in the field. Initially, the NAPDC will focus in two areas: educational webinars and a competitive grants program.

A launch webinar will be held from 1:00 to 2:30pm CST on Monday, January 24, 2022. To register, visit https://agdatacoop.org/webinars. Once registration is submitted, a post-submission page will appear with Zoom connection information. During this webinar, NAPDC leaders will introduce the project, share planned activities, and discuss their request for proposals.

Interested parties also may join the NAPDC listserv, which will be used to send messages about upcoming events and activities. To join, visit https://agdatacoop.org/get-involved.

Please contact the NAPDC team with any questions or to request additional information: https://agdatacoop.org/contact-us.
NSF Webinar on Current and Pending Support

This funding partnership between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) supports projects to develop and advance knowledge concerning dynamic language infrastructure in the context of endangered human languages— languages that are both understudied and at risk of falling out of use. Made urgent by the imminent loss of roughly half of the approximately 7,000 currently used languages, this effort aims to exploit advances in human-language technology to build computational infrastructure for endangered language research. The program supports projects that contribute to data management and archiving, and to the development of the next generation of researchers. Funding can support fieldwork and other activities relevant to the digital recording, documentation and analysis, and archiving of endangered language data, including the preparation of lexicons, grammars, text samples, and databases. Funding is available in the form of one- to three-year senior research grants and conference proposals.

Proposals Due: February 15, 2022

The NSF Convergence Accelerator has issued a new funding opportunity for a new research track topic: Securely Operating through 5G Infrastructure. Partnering with the Department of Defense’s Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, OUSD(RE), the NSF Convergence Accelerator has published a Solicitation, NSF 22-538 and Broad Agency Announcement (BAA), NSFBAA-CA22-01, to provide two submission pathways for researchers and innovators to submit their proposal.

5G wireless networks are crucial components of modern communication systems and have become essential to national security. The goal of this track is to seek enhancements to end devices and/or augmentations to 5G infrastructure to enable military, government, and critical infrastructure operators to have the capability to operate through public 5G networks, while meeting security and resilience requirements.

NSF will host a series of informational webinars on January 27, 2022 from 3:30-5:00 pm ET, February 1, 2022 1:30-3:00 pm ET, and February 3, 2022 3:30-5:00 pm ET.
Register for the webinars:

Mandatory Letter of Intent Deadline: February 16, 2022
Full Proposals Due: April 12, 2022

Ethical and Responsible Research (ER2) research projects use fundamental research to produce knowledge about what constitutes or promotes responsible or irresponsible conduct of research and why, as well as how to best instill responsible conduct of research into researchers, practitioners, and educators at all career stages. In some cases, projects will include the development of interventions or applications to ensure ethical and responsible research conduct.

The program funds research projects that identify:
  1. Factors that are effective in the formation of ethical science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) researchers;
  2. Approaches to developing those factors in all STEM fields that NSF supports; and
  3. Why and how those factors and approaches increase responsibly conducted research.
