Seniors Paloma Valdes and Elizabeth Wadle have made the field of eight finalists for the prestigious Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships, as announced by the Unity Foundation of La Porte County Monday afternoon.
The field of applicants was distilled down to eight based on a comprehensive criteria of academic achievement, community service, participation in extracurricular activities, and, to a lesser extent, financial aid.
The Lilly Endowment Scholarship is among the most challenging a student can earn. It covers full tuition at any accredited public or private Indiana college or university along with an annual $900 book stipend.
Following a round of interviews, applicants will have their names submitted to the Indiana Colleges of Indiana, Inc. for final selection. Two of the eight finalists will be notified by the end of this December.
Since 1998, the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship has funded approximately $5 million in college tuition and stipends to 70 students hailing from La Porte County.
