Brandon Thomas: 'Don't give up,' seek help for mental health issues
MSW alumnus Brandon Thomas of Hempfield, who has dealt with bipolar and post-traumatic stress disorders and depression for two decades, said it is important for those facing mental health issues not to give up and not to think they are a bad person for what they might have done. Read more.
Alumna wins VA award
MSW alumna Cordelia Nemitz won the May 2022 Clinical Excellence Award from the VA. She is the first social worker to have received this award at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Her nominator wrote: "Ms. Nemitz has been steadfast in her collaboration, help, and support to...the primary care team, and the veterans she serves. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in working in the challenging field of geriatrics."

Obituary: Thomas Leon Hooker
Thomas (Tom) Hooker, 89, died at his home in Nashua, New Hampshire on Thursday morning, May 5, 2022. A native of Moultrie, Georgia, he graduated from the Moultrie Public School for Colored Youth. He worked his way through his first two years of college at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia on farms, stacking peanuts and loading watermelons to be sold in farmers' markets. He moved to Columbus, Ohio to enroll at The Ohio State University and worked nights in a hotel kitchen and later for the U.S. Postal Service until he graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree. He later earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Read more.
