Faculty member pens book chapter
CWEL Academic Coordinator, Clinical Assistant Professor Alicia Johnson wrote the chapter “Adverse Childhood Experiences: How Incidents From the Past Affect a Student’s Classroom Behavior Today” for the book Strategies and Methods for Implementing Trauma-Informed Pedagogy. Dr. Johnson's advice and recommendations in the chapter come from her years of experience as a school social worker and the training that she received at Pitt. Read more.
School of Social Work and Animal Friends. Healthy you; Healthy pets
On August 14, 2021, a team from Animal Friends and Pitt were at the Homewood Health Fair to talk about how humans and pets can be healthier together. Dr. Mary Beth Rauktis from the School of Social Work brought the “Aging in Place with Pets Guide” created by the Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education fellowship students and funded by the Florence Stier endowment, as well as harnesses, dog leashes and collars donated by Animal Friends to the fair. Doctoral alumna fellow at UCSF
Recent doctoral graduate Serwaa S. Omowale is a T32 postdoctoral fellow for the transdisciplinary California Preterm Birth Initiative in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Omowale is the first social work scholar in the fellowship and her work will focus on structural racism and community strengths influencing preterm birth among Black women.
