Population Votes, Not Area
This broadside, published around 1913 by the National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage, demonstrates that the states with high populations rejected enfranchising women. The men in yellow denote the “Double Suffrage,” states where women were permitted to vote. Anti-suffragists argued that men voted in the interests of their female family members, and that women would “double” the votes of their male counterparts.

150th Anniversary of the Great Boston Fire
On the evening of 9 November 1872, the Great Boston Fire began in a warehouse on Summer Street. The fire was finally extinguished 12 hours later, with a loss of 776 buildings.
To complement the talks, we will display items from our collection related to the fire including illustrations, accounts, and before and after views of The Great Boston Fire. Visit the MHS on Thursday, Saturday, or Monday to see these items.

Our galleries and the library are open Monday, and Wednesday through Friday, from 10:00 AM to 4:45 PM, Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 7:45 PM, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The MHS building will be closed on Friday, 11 November 2022 in observance of Veteran’s Day.
Please note that the last admission for exhibition visitors will be 45 minutes prior to closing.
