Dorill Initiative and their team of Teaching Artists will come to the Loisaida, Inc. Center on Monday, May 9thTuesday, May 10th, and Thursday, May 12th at 3:30pm to lead introductory arts workshops focused on building a community of conscious artist/learners who are brave enough to advocate for autonomy in their lives and to tell their stories through the exploration, creation and reaction to arts & community.

LA COCINA DE LOISAIDA - Essex Market and Loisaida, Inc. present a series of cooking seminars led by Chef María Bido
This month's class is so popular, it's already sold out! So instead of just one, we're having TWO classes on Wednesday, May 11th and Wednesday, May 25th. In this lesson we’re going small with the plates but big on flavor! You’ll help to prepare an impressive spread of shareable bites and walk away with a new repertoire of party-ready favorites.

The class will be approximately 1.5 hours long and include time to savor the dishes you prepare together as a group. La Cocina de Loisaida takes place in the Essex Kitchen Essex Market's demonstration and teaching kitchen located on the market's mezzanine level.

Register now for the May 25th class!

La Cocina de Loisaida is a series of monthly hands-on cooking classes where we celebrate the rich cultural traditions of Puerto Rican cuisine. Longtime Lower East Side resident and local caterer María Bido shares the recipes and techniques passed down by her abuela — all based in authentic Puerto Rican flavors and ingredients from Essex Market.

This series is presented in partnership with Essex Market with the collective mission to preserve and pass down culinary heritage from the Lower East Side community. We invite all ages and abilities to join us for these unique, fun, and celebratory cooking classes at Essex Market.
SENIOR PROM - Acacia Network & IPRHE host Senior Prom on May 20th
Acacia Network and their affiliate, the Institute for the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Elderly, Inc. (IPRHE), would like to cordially invite you to the IPRHE Senior Prom on Friday, May 20th from 10am - 4pm at the Saint Vartan Church on 34th Street & Second Avenue in Manhattan.

Senior Prom will provide a much needed opportunity for our older adults ages 60+ to socialize in person and celebrate with peers, friends, community members, staff from older adults centers, and other partners. The day-long event will include music, food, activities, and entertainment.

After two years of facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the loss of so many in our communities, Acacia Network and IPRHE are more committed than ever to providing high-quality, culturally responsive programming to older adults in our neighborhoods. This wonderful event is a time of unity and hope, and will bring together older adults and their families from every borough, as well as community leaders, elected and government officials.

Notwithstanding, it is now time to restore our annual tradition and take back the streets, building on our past experiences and looking toward the future.

We are happy to announce this year's 35th Annual Loisaida Festival will return in person to Loisaida Avenue - Avenue C. Our 2022 festival theme, "Taking it back to our streets! – ¡Regresando a nuestras calles!", says it all, as we come back in full swing to bring unique music, cuisine, arts, and performances from the TriState area, Puerto Rico, and more. In addition, the Loisaida Festival will feature 20+ local sister organizations, CBOs, local businesses and merchants, city agencies, service providers, museums, artisans, performers, and workshops to engage our residents and the thousands of guests who will visit us.

In keeping with our annual tradition, this year's Loisaida Festival will represent a culmination of the exciting year-round, multigenerational, educational, artistic, media, arts, and environmental literacy related cultural programming stemming out of the Loisaida Inc. Media and Technology Center.

Some of the ongoing initiatives supported by the Loisaida Festival are Loisaida's Artistic Residency Program, our local 24/7 digital streaming channel LoisaidaTV hosted on YouTube, the media literacy program Media Used for Justice Equity and Respect (M.U.J.E.R.), our environmental justice literacy training program Ecolibrium, and the establishment of the culinary arts training facility, La Cocina de Loisaida - the Loisaida Teaching Commercial Kitchen, scheduled to open this year.
