Summer Institute in Computational Social Science
FAU Jupiter hosted the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science. The two-week institute was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and FAU’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College to bring together students, postdoctoral researchers and beginning faculty interested in computational social science — a discipline that uses computer modeling and data to understand society and behavior.
Session topics included text as data, website scraping, digital field experiments, machine learning and ethics. The immersive nature of the summer institute allowed participants ample time for collaboration and discussion about the intersections of technology, communication, psychology and society both during and outside of the workshops.

MobileMinds Hosts Love, Hope & Healing
Love, Hope & Healing, a Palm Beach County-based nonprofit organization, visited the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute on a field trip for the organization’s teen summer camp program. Love, Hope & Healing partners with organizations in the community to provide educational opportunities in areas such as biotechnology, cosmetology, dentistry, cooking, carpentry and welding, with the goal of enriching families and exposing youth to potential career opportunities.
David Cinalli, Ph.D., director of MobileMinds, led the program. The students toured the Brain Institute’s neuroscience labs and learned about the life of a neuroscientist directly from the source. The campers also gained their own experience as neuroscience researchers, learning the anatomy of the brain by dissecting a sheep brain and understanding how neurons communicate through a series of games and hands-on activities.
