USA Libraries Galleries are Expanding
For those of you who have delighted in visiting the USA Libraries gallery spaces, you’ll be happy to learn that there is now even more to enjoy! The Charles M. Baugh Biomedical Library is pleased to announce the opening of the ArtSpace@BioMed, located on the third floor of the library. The Biomedical Library did a “soft roll-out” of the space in October with a display titled “Haunted Mobile: Biomed Edition.” The exhibit features photos from the Doy Leale McCall Rare Book and Manuscript Library, as well as from the Mobile Medical Museum. The idea was to complement an event scheduled for October 27th at the Marx Library called “Haunted Mobile.”
The images at the Biomedical Library spotlight the Barton Academy, the first public school in Alabama. The Barton Academy building was used as a hospital for Union soldiers during the civil war and is known to have reported hauntings and paranormal activity. The other photos combine medical and spooky imagery.
In November and December, the ArtSpace@BioMed will open an exhibit titled “Veterans’ Expressions” featuring artwork by or for veterans. An artists’ reception and Veterans Day celebration is scheduled for Thursday, November 10th at 3pm in the ArtSpace. There are several other exhibits scheduled into 2023. For more information, contact Gail Kouame, gmkouame@southalabama.edu, Justin Robertson, jcrobert@southalabama.edu, or Paula Webb, pwebb@southalabama.edu.

Dr. Ryan Morini Presents Basics of Oral History Interviewing
On Friday, September 16, ten faculty, staff, and students gathered in the McCall Library for an instructional workshop on the basics of oral history interviewing. Presenter Dr. Ryan Morini shared tips on good practice throughout the interview process, including the importance of getting informed consent from participants, getting the best performance out of the equipment, and developing the skills to guide an in-depth conversation that will be valuable for researchers and community members.
The workshop was well-received, and we hope to offer others as we build our capacity to effectively collect, manage, preserve, and provide access to oral history collections that document Mobile’s rich history.
