Dear Member, Stakeholder, Supporter,
With every week we get a little nearer to #RaisingTheRoof. Repairs will start as early as Monday when contractors will be on site to start removing the revolving door unit and taking it away for repair. Alongside this, repair work will begin on the rips in the dome. Thanks to Facility Manager Joseph Roccasalva and his staff, the removal of snow from the top of the dome continues and will keep going through next week. The weather looks like it may play nice with us for the next 14 days and while still quite cold it won't be dropping any substantial snow. This will enable the clearing and repairs to ramp up.
The great work of our staff finding, visiting and assessing temporary locations, then booking, permitting and paying for them has meant that almost every program will continue at a temporary location during this period. It may not be home, but it's warm and dry, and it will enable our players to get active again after the latest virtual sessions. Coach Jamaal has now brought his online sessions to life with in-person workouts each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the event room. Competitive players will know from their coaches when they are scheduled to train in-person, and if players still have pandemic concerns they can train at home.

As a reminder, all sport facilities require a digital QR code to be presented to show their vaccinated status. Paper copies are no longer accepted as directed by the Provincial Government. Accepted medical exemptions will be reflected in the QR code. When facility staff scan each QR code it will display a green check mark or a red 'x' mark. Facility staff are not permitted to interpret or ignore the reading on their device.
With summer just around the corner, registration will open up very soon for all Outdoor Recreational programs. Check your email for program details and feel free to contact program staff for further information.
We're happy to assist you.

On Wednesday we held what was now our second Annual General Meeting in a virtual format. It was fantastic to see so many attendees on the screen and possibly our best turn out in the past 10 years! Among the agenda items we; presented on the key achievements and challenges of the 2020-2021 year, heard from Acting President Ed Whitehead on the clubs status, approved two new by-law changes and, elected a new, restructured board! None of these developments happen without the great work and effort put in by the Club Staff and Coaches, but just as importantly the AGM is a time to recognise the effort and oversight of the PFC Board. We said goodbye to two board members who, while not running for re-election, will still be seen regularly around the Club. Former Boys Competitive Director Barry who will now focus his energies on the Boys 2006 program and former Recreational Director Lisa who will spend more time with family and her women's recreational team. Thank you to both Lisa and Barry for their priceless commitment to PFC.
The elected PFC Board for 2021-2022 is:
- President - Ed Whitehead
- Vice President - John Antonopoulos
- Immediate Past President - Corrado Roccasalva
- Secretary - Roz Lavoie
-
Treasurer - Vacant
- Grassroots, Competitive, & High Performance - Warren Hutchinson
-
Recreational, All Abilities, & Community - Vacant
-
Marketing & Sponsorship - Vacant
- Facility & Strategy - Corrado Roccasalva
If you, or someone you know may be interested in taking up one of the vacant positions we have listed above please contact PFC Secretary Roz Lavoie HERE for an informal chat.

Region of Durham Looking for Volunteers (Aged 55+)
The Region of Durham, in partnership with the Durham Council on Aging, is looking to recruit volunteers to be featured in an upcoming anti-ageism campaign. The campaign aims to spark conversation and awareness of age-related stereotypes impacted by both older and younger adults. They are looking for Durham Region residents of diverse backgrounds and experiences, who are interested sharing their stories in a creative, visual way.
Participation is on a volunteer basis. They are looking for 3 older adults (aged 55+) to be featured in the video/poster and social media elements of the campaign. Those interested can contact Linnea Veloce at linnea.veloce@durham.ca or 289-928-3995 by February 7.

Our first PFC All Abilities book is now available!
Author and illustrator Anusha Broekhuyse joined us as a volunteer at the height of the pandemic, assisting with our virtual soccer programming. She then brought her love of our program to the field and joined us this summer as an All Abilities Coach.
We uncovered Anusha's amazing artistic talent which lead her to writing "Logan Learns to Play". She used her visual art skills to illustrate the enjoyment, fears, and challenges that youth living with disabilities face on a daily basis and hopes that this book will help inspire more children living with intellectual and/or physical disabilities to participate in sports.
Anusha is donating ALL proceeds of book purchases back to our All Abilities Program. "Logan Learns to Play" can be purchased from the front desk at the Pickering Soccer Centre for $15.00. You may also click the link below to purchase the book directly through Amazon.

The Covid Pandemic has had a huge impact on the retention of referees and attracting new referees. In 2021 the Pickering FC had 60 less active match officials than in 2019, the last full season of outdoor recreational soccer. The Club has a strong mentor program to assist the 1st and 2nd year match officials become comfortable in their role as a match official and help them become the best that they want to be.
For more information on being a match official in 2022 please contact Dave Lord HERE
