A few words from our Executive Director

As we move into the summer season, we have so much to be thankful for at St. Lucie Habitat for Humanity. We will soon be completing the construction of eight homes, as well as kicking off our first villa micro-neighborhood project with a groundbreaking on June 15th. This Villas micro-neighborhood in Lakewood Park will provide strength and stability to 10 of our family partners.

In our recently closed new homeownership application cycle, we set records for attendance in orientations and applications, and we are currently underwriting 40 completed applications.

Central to St. Lucie Habitat's mission is our work to provide affordable, safe, and decent homeownership for families: homes that safeguard a family's health, are free from physical hazards, and are designed to be accessible. We also work in advocating for neighborhoods that include healthy amenities such as outdoor space and access to wholesome food sources.

Families with limited incomes must often choose between a healthy home that meets these basic standards, and a home they can afford that fails to meet these needs.

The work of Habitat for Humanity is to create and preserve homeownership that provides low-wealth families with shelter, financial stability, and better health.

We are very excited to be able to continue to grow our new home construction program as well as our critical repair program. Your ongoing support of affordable housing creates better communities and helps families to thrive in our community.

Setting Records, St. Lucie Habitat

New Homeowner Application Cycle is closed

Recently closed, the Homeownership Application cycle

set records

At the end of April, St. Lucie Habitat for Humanity closed its most current New Homeownership application cycle. In the process, we set a record for the number of people attending orientations and the number of applications being distributed. We had 299 residents attend one of the four orientations we offered – two in Port St. Lucie and two in Fort Pierce. This attendance rate was much higher than our last set of orientations, which had a total of approximately 80 people in attendance. We handed out over 850 applications. From the number of applications that residents received, we met with 110 people and accepted 40 completed applications before closing the cycle.

Our next step is to underwrite the 40 completed applications to ensure they meet our requirements and qualifications including the income range, St. Lucie County residency, citizenship, creditworthiness, and a background check. If all the qualifications are met, a home visit from one of our Homeowner Selection and Support Committees teams will be scheduled. The team will report back to the full committee on what they observed. The committee will then meet to discuss the qualified applicants and if necessary, make selections based on which applicants have the most need. Once the selection process is complete, the St. Lucie Habitat Board of Directors will make the final approvals.

With Board approval, the applicants will be notified of their acceptance into the New Homeownership Program!

For the new Homeowner-In-Process family partners, this marks the beginning of their work in the St. Lucie Habitat new homeownership program. During the estimated 6-month to 24-month process, they will be required to complete 300 sweat equity hours, plus financial education and homeowner classes.

This current cycle has up to 11 homes available for deserving families in need of a decent, safe, and affordable place to live.

Our Volunteers Rock!

United in their belief in making a positive difference in their communities, it was another successful Red Day for our friends at Keller Williams Port St Lucie. With smiles on their faces and paint rollers in hand, a St. Lucie Habitat for Humanity home was painted and readied for our family partner. Thank you to our amazing volunteers!

Preparing it for our family partner, members from Expansion Church and some of our St. Lucie Habitat family partners came together on a beautiful, sunny day to landscape a St. Lucie Habitat home. Thank you!
