In a year wrought with trials, the refrigeration industry endured changes from day to day. In many instances, responding to challenges relied on technical innovation. It’s safe to say that the pandemic accelerated several technology trends, redirected others, and overall raised the stakes in the industry’s ongoing challenge to meet customer needs across a wide spectrum. 

Here are some of the current trends in the industrial HVAC industry:
THE INDUSTRY IS GROWING AT A RAPID RATE
Growth is the number one trend. 
An AHR Expo and ASHRAE Journal survey found nearly 88 percent of respondents in the industry reported a “good” or “excellent” business year in 2019, and 43 percent of those respondents expected 5-10 percent growth for their business. Another 23.5 percent expected growth to exceed 10 percent. This is a slight dip from the previous year’s survey, but still a remarkably positive assessment of how current businesses are doing. According to experts and multiple media sources, Refrigerated storage is more in demand than ever, which is fueling a surge in the construction of refrigerated warehouses with automation and other features designed for flexibility. The big driver is the expansion of online grocery shopping, which doubled its share during the pandemic. Many of the new warehouses will be built with robotics and other aspects that will help shift among channels for both receiving and shipping, enabling them to better handle changes in demand between retail and foodservice. Offering the latest innovation in design and design-build services, all JAX departments work together to seamlessly ensure that our Customers’ projects are executed smoothly, from concept to installation. JAX has proven to be the key to transitioning Cold Storage Facility concepts to life, with a focus on innovation, environmental impact, sustainability, life-cycle costs, and potential future expansion.

MORE PEOPLE ARE WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY
The most recent employment numbers are record-breaking. The industry outlook predicts 13 percent growth through 2028, which clearly speaks to the overall health of the industry.
Have you seen growth at your shop? Noticed new competitors in your service area? More people and money in any industry can be a double-edged sword: Yes, it means the HVAC pie is bigger, but it also means fighting harder for your piece.

SMART TECHNOLOGY ISN'T GOING AWAY
A few years ago, the "Internet of Things" was a buzz-phrase referring to a growing number of Wi-Fi-enabled household appliances. TVs. Stereos. Refrigerators. Thermostats. Today, it’s estimated more than 14 million homes in the U.S. use “smart home” or "smart technology" devices and products—and that number is only expected to go up.

AIR QUALITY IS A MUST
With the effects of the pandemic still a constant presence there is renewed interest in indoor air quality products. Regardless of location, whether it be a home office or a commercial office building, employees are demanding improved air filtration as a basic necessity. We are seeing a resurgence of research and PropTech applications around indoor air quality from HVAC manufacturers and service providers alike. Filtration happens in multiple stages. The first is source control; these are devices that control the source of pollutants. Second is ventilation; the most basic form are fans and open doors and windows. In larger commercial applications, more sophisticated ventilation devices are required. Last but not least is filtration. We are seeing an increase in ultraviolet (UV) air filtration demand, as UV is known to kill viruses and bacteria.

CHANGE IN REFRIGERANTS
We are starting to see more and more transitions to low-GWP refrigerants. At the end of 2020, the passage of the American Innovation in Manufacturing Act, or the AIM Act, gave the U.S. EPA the authority to phasedown HFC refrigerants in much the same manner it phased out Ozone Depleting Substances under the Montreal Protocol.

Looking ahead, indoor air quality will be a more important topic than ever, as well as sustainability and energy efficiency. We are also reaching key thresholds on regulatory issues such as the transition to low-GWP refrigerants. Smart building technology is expanding, and benefits to HVAC systems are becoming more evident. As the industry leans heavily toward digital transformations, integrating new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and computer modeling will be even more front-and-center.

A very special Happy 31st Anniversary
to Dana Yoho!
This month marks 31 years of service for Dana Yoho. Dana joined RHVACS in 1990 by working in the field to learn the installation side of the business, and as necessary training to become Construction Manager. He was construction manager of RHVACS for 28 years and and moved into the position of General Manager in 2019.

When Dana is not working he enjoys relaxing with his wife and kids. Where ever he lays his hat is where he calls home. He enjoys travel and looks forward to visiting Snowmass, Co. His favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, he pulls for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and would love to drive a Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita. Though he got into the industry for family and loves what he does, he'd gladly change his career to a beer taster! If he could have a meal with anyone, he'd love to sit down with Rodney Dangerfield.

When not hard at work for JAX Refrigeration, Kenny enjoys fishing and some good 'ole alone time. BUT, he always looks forward to returning to Miss Patty and Brix. Though home is where his heart is, he would like to visit Scotland or Ireland. His favorite car is a Buick Grand National, his favorite movie is Where the Red Fern Grows and he loves Thanksgiving the most out of all the holidays. By way of some dumb luck he ended up in the refrigeration industry but, ever the outdoorsman, if he could change his profession he would be a game warden. Our JAX Mechanical Service Department fields the following
frequently asked questions on a daily basis:
How long should a cooling system last?
Life expectancy depends on the amount of cooling run time and how often the system receives preventative maintenance. In some parts of the country, the average residential cooling system’s run time is as much as 2,500 hours per year. Thus, after around 30,000 hours of cooling run time (12 years), your AC system will start to wear out, and you might consider replacement versus repair(s).
Proper (and consistent) preventative maintenance extends the life of an AC system.

Indoor air quality and system operation?
An out-of-warranty system that requires frequent repairs may be more than an expensive nuisance — it could also be unhealthy, even unsafe in some instances. Old dirty indoor coils, dirty burners, and cracked heat exchangers (if you have gas heat) will affect the quality of the air you breathe and will affect proper system operation.

WELCOME ABOARD!
JAXCool recently completed a complex project for a meat processing company in Texas. It consisted of installing insulated metal wall panels from the top of an existing IMP ceiling up to metal decking to close off the interstitial space above the ceiling so that the area could be conditioned to mitigate any moisture issues. It consisted of 350 lf of wall, but each panel had to be cut and trimmed around existing structure, conduits, fire sprinkler lines which is very intricate and tedious work. This project worked in conjunction with JAX Mechanical who furnished and installed the HVAC units for the newly created space.
Restaurant HVAC Specialty (RHVACS) centers its services on the supply and installation of heating, refrigeration, air conditioning systems and kitchen hood ventilation for restaurants. RHVACS provides economical turnkey designs, and when combined with the full range of industry-related services at JAX Refrigeration, offers comprehensive one-stop service solutions for your entire project.

Our restaurant HVAC specialty team is wrapping up work on a cancer treatment facility located in St. Augustine, FL. RHVACS started this project on 02/22/2021 and this facility should be turned over to the owner by the end of July 2021.

JAX Ind is a turnkey engineering procurement and manufacturing department underneath the JAX Refrigeration umbrella and is focused on manufacturing new and existing skid solutions for the power, fuel and gas industries. JAX Ind operates at our 30,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and carries D1.1 and ASME Section IX welding qualifications.

All material and equipment is thoroughly inspected and inventoried upon receipt as it moves through our production/manufacturing facility. As we continue to move toward certification, JAX Ind still operates with inspection and test plans in line with ISO 9001. We perform full QA/QC and FAT prior to shipment to validate acceptance and final approval.
Our Focus
JAX Ind is focused on providing integrated skid solutions, with a focus on safety, quality and design efficiency. Fun Facts About Independence Day
  1. The first July 4 celebration took place at the White House on 1801, hosted by Thomas Jefferson.
  2. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1870.
