Summer is winding down and now is the time when we set our minds toward the year ahead, and Eugenio María de Hostos Community College is looking forward to a year of new opportunities and broadening horizons. The College has been recognized as a finalist for the prestigious Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the President’s Initiatives continue to develop exciting programs for students, and our Middle-States accreditation self-study report affirmed that, among many accomplishments, Hostos has significantly enhanced our three-year graduation, degree conferment, and graduate transfer rate.
The Hostos Community College Foundation supports the work and mission of the College, ensuring that these outstanding accomplishments continue to grow and benefit this community. Coming into the new academic year, how can we help students to attain both a degree and an inspiring college experience? Whether you are faculty, staff, or a friend of the College, your experiences with the College probably have given you some insight about the needs of our students, and maybe how you can help. This newsletter contains several opportunities to engage and support incredible Hostos students, but there are so many ways that you or your organization can invest in Hostos Community College. To discover ways to give or learn about partnership opportunities with the College, visit our website or reach out today.

It’s hard to believe that Giving Tuesday, the national day of giving, is just a couple months away! This year, our CUNY-wide “CUNY Tuesday” campaign will not include a payroll deduction option for CUNY faculty and staff. Instead, we encourage our giving community to enroll in recurring payments via the CUNY Tuesday website between October 8 and November 29. Recurring payments are the easiest way to support students with a manageable, monthly payment. Contact Idelsa Méndez if you have questions or want help planning your gift.
To set up your recurring gift at any time, visit www.givetohostos.com, enter your donation amount, then click “add donation.” When more options appear, select “Recurring gift.”

Hostos Community College graduate and Kaplan Leadership Scholar Ndongo Njie has been accepted to Princeton University.
Njie graduated from Hostos Community College in January 2022. He is the first Kaplan Leadership Scholar to be accepted to Princeton University. During his time at Hostos he was elected to Phi Theta Kappa, the International College Honors Society, and received the 2021 Environmental Stewardship and Community Service Award and the General Academic Excellence Fund. Njie was one of eleven Kaplan Scholars in this year’s cohort.
“I’m delighted by the news,” Hostos President Daisy Cocco De Filippis said. “Ndongo’s talents and determination to excel are impressive. Princeton will provide further opportunities for learning and for growth — and I know Ndongo will make the most of them.”
The Kaplan Educational Foundation eliminates barriers to post-secondary education for historically underrepresented low-income Black and Latinx students of exceptional academic merit attending community colleges. The program provides extensive tutoring, academic advisement services, leadership and career training, stipends for living expenses, and other resources and support.

BTSA Fund assists students with tuition costs. The award is need-based and distributed in the form of a tuition voucher, that is applied directly to the student’s balance. Because these funds go directly toward tuition, this fund is one of the most critical resources for students who need a small boost to complete their degree. In just the last semester, 39 students received support from this fund, making it one of our most-used scholarship opportunities. If you would like to support this fund, visit givetohostos.com and select BTSA from the drop-down menu. | | | | | |
