The Times, They are a Changin'
New DOE (Dept of Energy) requirements for Commercial Refrigeration

The enforcement deadline for the Department of Energy’s (DOE) new Walk-In Coolers and Freezers (WICF) efficiency standards began on January 1, 2020. Some equipment is now held to higher standards. Who is responsible for compliance? Do you need to replace existing systems? Which components are affected?

The new energy conservation standards for WICF refrigeration systems were issued on July 10, 2017. The new rules introduce efficiency standards commensurate with available technology. End-users will benefit from reduced energy bills and increased equipment efficiency.

Heatcraft has been paving the way, supporting our customer base to meet this regulatory deadline. Below, we have simplified the DOE’s new standards for WICFs to help you quickly assess your need for compliance and what role you play in the process.

Regulation Summary:

Up to 40% energy reductions in WICFs equipment manufactured on, or after, January 1, 2020 for:
  • Medium-temperature condensing units
  • Medium-temperature self-contained units

July 10, 2020 for:
  • Low-temperature condensing units
  • Medium-temperature unit coolers
  • Low-temperature unit coolers
  • Low-temperature self-contained units

The Basics
  • Mandates energy efficiency requirements for walk-in coolers and freezers 3,000 sq. ft. and below
  • Regulates air-cooled condensing units, unit coolers and package systems used with walk-in coolers and freezers and unit coolers used in supermarket walk-in cooler and freezers.
  • Requires compliance for both new equipment installations and equipment replacement.
  • Equipment manufactured prior to compliance date can be sold, installed and operated after compliance date. Compliance is based on date of manufacture of the individual equipment
  • All parties are responsible for compliance
  • Equipment unit size may have increased. Equipment functionality may have changed. If replacing existing equipment, confirm mounting/clearance requirements and any operational adjustments needed

you may NOT know!

  • It started with the Romans
Ancient Rome observed the day as a pagan fertility festival called Lupercalia, with the celebration dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Roman founders Romulus and Remus.
  • In the 1300's it became associated with love and romance
In the 1300's Roman Pope Gelasius officially declared the date of February 14 "St. Valentine's Day."
  • The first valentine was sent in the 15th century
The oldest record of a valentine being sent, according to History.com , was a poem written by a French medieval duke named Charles to his wife in 1415.
  • Valentines is BIG business
About 55% of Americans celebrate Valentine's Day and spend an estimated $19.6 billion a year, including more than $1.8 billion on candy alone.
  • Americans send 145 million valentines day cards a year
Making it the second biggest holiday for exchanging greeting cards, after Christmas! Teachers receive the most Valentine's Day cards annually, followed by children, mothers, and wives.
  • Over $650 million is spent on pets
More than 5 million American households gave Valentine's Day presents to their pet dogs last year, and more than 2 million picked up presents for their cats.
  • Conversation hearts started as medical lozenges
A Boston pharmacist named Oliver Chase invented a machine that simplified the way medical lozenges — used for sore throats and other illnesses — could be made. The result was America's first candy-making machine, because the pharmacist soon started shifting his focus from making lozenges to candy instead!
  • In 1866 the conversation began
It was Oliver's brother, Daniel Chase, who started printing sentimental messages on the Necco sweethearts, though these candies were bigger than the versions we have today — and featured much longer printed sayings and phrases. Some of the first messages ? "Married in white you have chosen right" and "How long shall I have to wait? Please be considerate."
  • Nearly 6 million people get engaged on Valentine's Day each year
Valentine's Day is one of the most popular days to pop the question, with as many as 6 million couples getting engaged on February 14.
  • Other cultures around the world celebrate differently
Many Latin American countries know the holiday as el día de los enamorados (day of lovers) or día del amor y la amistad (day of love and friendship). Though couples exchange flowers and chocolate on this day, the holiday's focus is also directed at showing gratitude to friends !
In Japan, it's customary for just the women to give confections to the men in their lives, with the quality of the chocolate indicating their true feelings, according to Fortune . On March 14, exactly a month later, the men repay the favor by celebrating the increasingly popular "White Day."

MEAS has been contracted by a top General Contractor, headquartered in North Carolina, to design a Refrigerated Avacado Facility in Laredo, TX. This design build project is far from complete, as our Refrigeration is expected to execute the Refrigeration Construction scope when design is complete!

We are very satisfied with the collaboration and responsiveness of JAX and MEAS on the design build project of the new refrigerated DC project. The 75% Design drawings were ready ahead of schedule and permit ready, above and beyond the expectations thus far. Looking forward to a successful project completion, more work down the road.
