An Interdisciplinary Look at American Elections
In "How We Vote," a Grand Challenge Seminar, three Carnegie Mellon University faculty bring a multidisciplinary perspective to a remote examination of the process of voting in American democracy. Lisa TetraultTeddy Seidenfeld and Aaditya Ramdas conceived the idea for the class, which includes many first-time voters, in order to take a deep dive into a complex and unstandardized system. 

Reframing a Movement
As the United States celebrates the centennial of the 19th Amendment in 2020, Lisa Tetrault, associate professor of history and a leading scholar of women’s suffrage, has been at the forefront of projects nationwide to inform and remind the public that the fight for voting access was a long, multi-generational movement fueled by diverse, complex women that remains unfinished and ongoing.

Misperceptions About Southeast Tornado Risk
Tornadoes are spontaneous, destructive vortexes of air that descend to the Earth during particular atmospheric conditions. A new study from Carnegie Mellon University has found most people are familiar with the risk associated with Great Plains tornadoes, leaving residents in the southeastern United States vulnerable to increased storm risk.

When alumnus Jamie Quinterno decided to become a Tartan, he never imagined he was taking his first step in revolutionizing pediatric heart surgery. But that’s exactly what his biomedical company PECA Labs is doing — with an eye toward using their disruptive technology to change cardiothoracic and vascular surgery for adults, too.
