Japanese Stiltgrass:
A Compost Nightmare

Japanese Stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum) is an invasive annual grass that threatens our native plants and vegetation. It can be identified by its silver hairs down the center of its bamboo-like blades.
By the fall, the plant begins to flower and can put out between 100 and 1,000 seeds which can remain viable for over 5 years. To control the spread, the University of Maryland Extension Office recommends hand-pulling all weeds before they have a chance to go to seed.

Due to the viability of the seed, do NOT compost in your backyard or in our yard trim or Feed The Green Bin collection programs. Material should be bagged for trash collection.

Visit University of Maryland Extension’s website to learn more about Japanese Stiltgrass and other invasive species found in Maryland and how to manage them on your property.
