On September 5, 2019, alumni living in the South Bay Beach Cities were invited to Verandas Beach House in Manhattan Beach to network and mingle with the campus president, while learning about upcoming changes and other campus news.

CSUDH Night at Dodger Stadium
|
CSUDH hosted its first-ever college night at Dodger Stadium, which featured an exclusive co-branded Dodgers/CSUDH baseball cap giveaway on September 20, 2019. Proceeds from the game benefited the Alumni Scholarship.

Communications Alumni Reception

The Communications Department hosted alumni at the Faculty Development Center for a reception on October 2, 2019. Numerous alumni from the discipline returned for an evening of mingling, rekindling, and receiving information about the current status of the Communications department and the services being offered to students.

Gloria Gammage, RN, MSN
(BS ’97, MS '01)
was appointed as new Chief Nurse Executive Officer (CNEO) at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach. In this role, she oversees all nursing operations at the medical center.

Dr. De Vida Gill
(BA ’92) just released a children’s book,
Help Me Unmask, which addresses self-esteem, empowerment, and self-discovery through the eyes of children from diverse backgrounds. Dr. De Vida Gill is an author, licensed clinical social worker, and certified transformational coach/strategist, as well as an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Dan Guerrero
(MPA ’83) has extended his tenure to June 2020; he will retire as UCLA athletic director at the end of the 2019-2020 academic year. Guerrero has served in the role since 2002, and the Bruins have won 32 national championships during his tenure. He was the athletic director at CSU Dominguez Hills for five years and UC Irvine for 10 years before transitioning to UCLA.

David Howard
(BS ’19) will attend Durham University in England to play basketball and earn his Master’s Degree. Durham is a member of British Universities & Colleges Sport, the governing body for university sports in the UK (the equivalent of the NCAA). At CSUDH, Howard led the basketball team in rebounds per game (5.5) while shooting 51 percent and averaging 10.2 points.

Anthony Plascencia
(BS ’19) credits the Male Success Alliance (MSA) with providing the guidance to make it possible for him to graduate as a first-generation college student. Though Plascencia once thought he'd never go to college, in May 2019, he received a bachelor's in criminal justice and hopes to start work in his home county of Sacramento this month as a probation officer. MSA improves access, retention, and graduation rates of men of color by providing academic support, professional development, and mentoring.

Philip Schlom
(BS ’86) has accepted the vacant position of Chief Accounting Officer of AZZ Inc., a global provider of metal coating services, welding solutions, specialty electrical equipment, and highly engineered services.
|
|
William Wilkins
(BS ’78, MPA ’80)
passed away on August 7, 2019. After returning from active duty in the Vietnam War, he pursued his bachelor and masters degrees from CSUDH. He later met his wife, Gertrude, in Los Angeles and was a loving father to three children. Wilkins was the Executive Director for the Berkeley Housing Authority, HUD Public Housing Director, Chicago Hub, and the Housing Director of the City of Oxnard. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed reading, photography, and traveling with his family.
