Florida Atlantic University’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College met the “Kenan Challenge,” raising $1 million to match a $1 million gift from the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust. This gift creates a permanent endowment for the Kenan Social Engagement Program, which provides scholarships and seed funding to Wilkes Honors College students who learn about social entrepreneurship and write business plans to start their ventures.

'FAU Day' Celebrated at the Florida Capitol

Florida Atlantic University recently celebrated “FAU Day” at the Florida Capitol. Every year, FAU sends a select group of students to join FAU President John Kelly and the FAU Board of Trustees to advocate on behalf of the University in Tallahassee. Wilkes Honors College Sophomore Vineet Reddy, Ken Dawson-Scully, Ph.D., associate vice president for strategic initiatives and Cara Perry, assistant vice president of communication for FAU's northern campuses joined to represent FAU Jupiter. FAU Day delegates toured both the Senate and House chambers, met one-on-one with various legislators. Marshall Criser III, the chancellor of the State University System of Florida served as the keynote speaker over lunch. The day concluded with a reception at the Capitol for FAU students, legislators and aides.  Photos

Student Spotlight

"The Flagler Scholarship gives me the opportunity to dedicate myself to my studies and developing myself as a person who aspires to change the world in little ways by educating and inspiring the kids who will redefine our world in the years to come," said Michael. "It is because of this program that I have had the chance to cross some amazing things off of my bucket list without bearing the burden of financing these life-changing adventures."

Michael works two part-time jobs, practices and competes in karate and teaches Sunday School at St. Peter Catholic Church.

FAU CARD KidsFest!

The Florida Atlantic University  Center for Autism and Related Disabilities  (CARD) 5th Annual Charity Softball Game and Kids Fest raised more than $40,000. Thank you ESPN West Palm, FirstService Residential, John C. Cassidy Air conditioning, Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium and Stanley Steemer for hosting event held Saturday, Oct. 19 and raising funds to support our students!

Healthier Jupiter, a community initiative founded to address health and quality of life issues, awarded Florida Atlantic University Brain Institute's Ascend Program $2500. The grant will be used to fund "Brain Blitz Jupiter - Exercise Your Mind," an educational program for children and adults.  


Students and Faculty of FAU Brain Institute's Graduate Neuroscience Training Program (GNTP) recently attended and hosted a booth at the Society for Neuroscience 49th annual meeting in Chicago. The conference gathers nearly 30,000 neuroscientists to present emerging science, learn from experts, forge collaborations with peers, explore new tools and technologies, and advance careers.

FAU selected Bethany Stanhope, Ph.D., as the Executive Director for Academic Operations of the Jupiter campus effective October 19, 2019.
 
"Among her initial efforts, she will work with Wilkes Honors College faculty member Johanna Kowalko, Ph.D., to establish a laboratory course in genetics and with Ken Dawson-Scully, Ph.D., as he develops inquiry-based labs for the FAU-Max Planck Academy."


Alyssa R. Gonzalez-DeHass, Ph.D., a professor of educational psychology in the College of Education at FAU Jupiter recently published Parent Involvement for Motivated Learners: Encouraging Self-Directed and Resilient Students .

Parent Involvement for Motivated Learners provides pre-service teachers and researchers with guidance on how to foster mindful, healthy school-family partnerships that empower students to become resilient, self-directed learners.

 
James W Forgan, Ph.D. an associate professor in Exceptional Student Education in the College of Education on the FAU Jupiter campus recently released The ADHD Empowerment Guide.

The book helps parents identify identify their child's natural abilities, as well as determine key characteristics in their child that research has shown to help children with ADHD succeed in life.


Jacqueline H. Fewkes, Ph.D., associate professor of anthropology at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College recently edited, Anthropological Perspectives on the Religious Uses of Mobile Apps

The edited volume deploys digital ethnography in varied contexts to explore the cultural roles of mobile apps that focus on religious practice and communities, as well as those used for religious purposes (whether or not they were originally developed for that purpose). 

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at FAU Jupiter

Kevin Wagner, Ph.D., a professor of political science at FAU will give an in-depth look at how the presidential race is developing during “Race for the White House” on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at noon. On Thursday, Dec. 5 at 9:30 a.m., “The Politics of Primaries” will examine the nature and history of the presidential selection process.

Bert Diament, Ph.D . will demonstrate how to interact with people, particularly relatives you can’t stand in "The Psychology of Interpersonal Relationships" on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 9:30 a.m. Register

The John D. MacArthur Campus presently enrolls more than 1,500 students and offers groundbreaking programs in research and education. Two of the world’s leading research organizations, the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and Scripps Research Institute are located on the campus and offer high school, undergraduate and graduate students transformational experiences not found anywhere else in the world. Wilkes Honors College which provides 440 students with a live-in, all-honors educational experience and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the largest membership program of its kind in the nation.
