ACTA's Living Cultures Grant Program:
Applications Now Open!
DEADLINE: May 3, 2022
The Living Cultures Grant Program seeks to sustain and strengthen traditional arts with project-based grants up to $5,000 for nonprofits, tribal entities, and other organizations who work with fiscal sponsors.
*NEW*
The 2022 Living Cultures Grant will be limited to applicants in these 10 Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Marin, Napa, and Sonoma.
Supporting activities between July 15, 2022 and July 15, 2023.
The Living Cultures grant application will launch March 1, 2022.
The Living Cultures Grant is generously supported by the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Walter and Elise Haas Fund.

The Apprenticeship Program contracts California-based mentor artists for $3,000 to offer intensive, one-on-one training in a specific traditional art form to an
eligible apprentice for 6 to 12 months.
Supporting activities between July 15, 2022 and June 30, 2023.

Journey to Surrender:
ACTA Apprenticeship Public Sharing
As many of our program participants deal with transitioning between virtual and in-person activities, we've been delighted to see the variety of formats ACTA's Apprenticeship cohort has engaged with for their public sharings!
One example is a short dance film by mentor artist Erik K. Raymond Lee and his 2021 ACTA apprentice in praise dancing, Jeremy Brooks. Both Erik and Jeremy are African-American Christians from Oakland, CA—they share a passion for self-expression through dance and hold the same values of utilizing the arts as a medium to engage in and uplift critical discussions. Together, they explored best practices on how to generate movement that is biblically based in intention and speaks to the principles of the Christian faith.
Erik writes: “This short film captures a need for people to find love, joy and peace in quiet moments where we decide to surrender to the right things that bring us strength. In this case while it is spiritual in connection to God, it is also a practical invitation to surrender to how things are going in life, and reach for the ways we can find strength in what we have that allows us to move forward. It is a journey indeed as it is not easy.”

Roots for Challenging Times:
A spring concert series
2021 ACTA Living Cultures grantee organization, Inspired Sound Initiative, launches its Roots for Challenging Times concert series in April! Join them in Los Angeles for lecture demonstrations in the traditional music and dances of Veracruz, Mexico; Andalusia, Spain; West Africa; and the Middle East. The events are free and open to the public!

The Native Arts and Cultures Foundation (NACF) is now accepting applications for the LIFT–Early Career Support for Native Artists program, a one-year award and early career support program for emerging Native artists to develop and realize new projects. The program’s focus is to provide financial support and professional development to artists whose work aims to uplift communities and advance positive social change.
