Research

FAU scientists Kazuma Murakami, Ph.D., Justin Palermo, and Bethany Stanhope Ph.D., working in the lab of Alex Keene Ph.D. of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, performed a large-scale genetic screen and identified a gene that regulates both sleep duration and starvation resistance. The study entitled, "A screen for sleep and starvation resistance identifies a wake-promoting role for the auxiliary channel unc79" was published in the June online issue of G3 Genes|Genomes|Genetics... A Land-based Sponge Nursery to Restore Habitats and Improve Water Quality in Florida Bay

Andia Chaves Fonnegra, Ph.D., an assistant professor of biology in the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University, and Shirley Pomponi, Ph.D., a research professor at FAU Harbor Branch received a grant from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop a land-based sponge nursery in the aquaculture park at FAU Harbor Branch. Researchers will grow 12 species of sponges (Phylum Porifera) from larvae, buds, and 3-D sponge cell aggregates. This project will lead to the selection and optimization of more resilient genotypes, add genetic variability, and increase species diversity to restore wild populations and improve water quality in Florida Bay.

Merritt Joins “Partnership Programs” Team

FAU welcomes Jordan Merritt, Ph.D. to the Jupiter Campus as the new assistant director for partnership programs. He has spent the last three years working at the FAU Office of Undergraduate Research & Inquiry coordinating and teaching the courses associated with the NSF-LEARN program. “With his experience promoting undergraduate research at FAU, we are excited to add him to the Jupiter team so he can further promote, develop, and manage the FAU Max Planck Honors Program,” said Ken Dawson-Scully, MS.c., Ph.D., professor and associate vice president for the Division of Academic Affairs. Merritt earned his Ph.D. from FAU with his dissertation research centered on immune interactions with malaria infected red blood cells.

The FAU Max Planck Honors Program supports several undergraduate opportunities in neuroscience and attracts high-performing and talented students such as National Merit Scholars and students in the FAU High School in partnership with the Max Planck Academy. The FAU Max Planck Honors Program (www.fau.edu/mphp) provides undergraduate honors students from the Wilkes Honors College and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science with exclusive enrichment opportunities, including courses taught or co-taught with Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience scientists, and it is the only one of its kind in the world.

MobileMinds, a branch of the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute’s ASCEND (Advancing STEM Community Engagement through Neuroscience Discovery) program, recently received generous support from the Per and Astrid Heidenreich Family Foundation. MobileMinds, aims to close the Title I STEM gap in Northern Palm Beach County by taking science and scientists to middle school students who are falling far behind in this area.

The MobileMinds van, wrapped in kid-friendly brain illustrations, delivers and demonstrates neuroscience principles with fun, touch-screen and VR-based lessons. “Brain Boxes' ' are left with each participating student that allows for take-home activities. The program partners with the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium (SFSCA) to build and teach the curriculum.

“The Heidenreich gift will allow us to extend our educational outreach programs to many more kids in Palm Beach, Martin and Broward counties, particularly those historically underserved,” said Randy Blakely, Ph.D., Executive Director of FAU’s Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute. “As practicing neuroscientists, we take seriously the statement that ‘a mind is a terrible thing to waste.’ This gift will have a far-reaching impact.”

This donation builds on a recent Impact the Palm Beaches “Merit Grant” to support MobileMinds... Read More
