About 100 faculty and staff attended a town hall, this past Friday, lead by FBI Special Agent David P. Fernicola, Jr., covering foreign government efforts to illicitly acquire university-created intellectual property.

Fernicola talked about the tradecraft other countries use to obtain advanced research, cutting-edge technology and insightful scholarship from university researchers. Foreign states, in particular U.S. adversaries, often illegitimately obtain academic research and information to bolster their scientific, economic and military development goals. The FBI produced The Risk to Academia for more information.

Fernicola visited FAU as part of the FBI and federal funding agencies initiatives to educate academic institutions about the risks and best practices to prevent IP theft by other countries. Their efforts made the front page of Monday’s New York Times

FAU Vice President for Research Dan Flynn, Ph.D., and Fernicola offered to visit individual colleges, faculty assemblies or other interested groups to address the threats and preventive steps. Request a speaker here .

FAU offers the following guidelines for international research collaborations.
Survey Shows that Floridians Consider Climate Change a Threat

Two-thirds of Floridians are concerned about climate change and feel as though the government is not doing enough to address the problem, according to the first Florida Climate Resilience Survey. The survey was conducted by the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science's Center for Environmental Studies and the Business and Economics Polling Initiative in the College of Business. READ MORE.
Sensor Algorithms Detect Tremors

FAU researchers and their collaborators have developed machine-learning algorithms combined with wearable sensors that can continuously monitor Parkinson's disease patients' tremors. The information can be used to more effectively manage and treat the tremors.

Behnaz Ghoraani, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, was the senior author of the study published in the journal Sensors. READ MORE.
