Welcome to the Fall 2020 edition of the Hostos Community College Foundation Newsletter. A new school year has begun and while it is certainly a year unlike any other, much remains the same. Students at Hostos are working hard toward their academic and professional goals, and the Foundation serves to support them along the way. This year, our dedicated students will adapt to overcome new and greater challenges, and so will we. From our first ever Virtual Golf Classic, to monthly online Alumni Mixers, we are reimagining how we engage with one another while keeping our focus firmly on our mission: enabling student success. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our ongoing efforts and for your continued investment in our students.

2020 Virtual Scholarship Fund Golf Classic
On Thursday, September 17, the Hostos Community College Foundation hosted its first ever Virtual Scholarship Fund Golf Outing Classic, which honored the fourteen-year tradition of the Scholarship Fund Golf Outing. While it was a very different event due to the challenges of this season, it was highly successful, raising more than $82,000, which includes a renewal of the $50,000 Madruga Family Extenuating Circumstances and Financial Need Scholarships.
The Virtual Scholarship Fund Golf Classic featured a fun challenge between Hostos Community College Foundation Chairperson José Sánchez Kinghorn and CUNY Chancellor Felix V. Matos Rodríguez at the beautiful Split Rock Golf Course in the Bronx. Professional golfer Greg Moon provided tips, and we took a walk down memory lane with a look back at fourteen years of the golf outing, which has raised more than $1.1 million over that time. The event premiered live on YouTube and Facebook, and since then has been viewed more than 400 times. While we were unable to delight in spending an afternoon together on the green, we are pleased to share that we raised critical funds that will help our students persevere toward academic success, thanks to our generous donors and sponsors.
We wish to express our profound appreciation to the sponsors of this year’s event; Title Sponsor, Maddd Equities; Gold Sponsors, Aufgang Architects and 1199 SEIU; Silver Sponsors: Schindler, Ultimate Abstract of New York, Ponce Bank and Bronx Terminal Market; Bronze Sponsors: Heating & Building Supply, and Recycle Track Systems. Thank you to our Golf Hole Sponsors: Henry Schein Cares, Marisco Centro, Football Club of New York City, GNR Building Systems, and Mott Haven Bar and Grill. We would also like to acknowledge Golf Hole Sponsor Alex Díaz, who gave in memory of his dear friend and long-time supporter of Hostos, Anthony Chiarelli.
If you want to see the event or make a gift, it’s not too late! Watch the event here, or give by going here.

Forward, Together Campaign
Our deepest thanks goes out to the many of you who joined our Chairperson, José Sánchez Kinghorn, in his $10,000 match campaign to support the Hostos Student Emergency Relief Fund. We surpassed our $20,000 goal, raising $25,302 in support of the Hostos Student Emergency Relief Fund. In this time when so much is uncertain, your continued support for our students reminds them that their community is invested in their success.
The Hostos Student Emergency Relief Fund provides essential assistance to students in need of emergency financial aid for unexpected expenses. Our students encounter many barriers along their academic journeys, and the pandemic has compounded these existing challenges. Whether they are facing an unexpected medical bill, food or housing insecurity, or struggling to afford tuition and school supplies, this emergency fund helps. It enables our students to persist toward their educational and professional goals.
On behalf of the Hostos Community College Foundation and the students we serve, thank you for your support. Your generosity empowers our community and city to move forward, together.

Food Pantry Receives Donation Worth $27,000
|
|
On August 20, the Division of Institutional Advancement secured a donation of 1,000 boxes of non-perishable food valued at $27,000 for the Hostos food pantry. The New York Department of Sanitation provided the generous donation, thanks to the outreach efforts of development officer Idelsa Méndez, along with our long-standing community partner, Catholic Charities, who helped to facilitate the donation. Student health services director, Fabian Wander, explained the impact of the gift, “The pandemic has had a significant impact on our students, and many are currently experiencing food insecurity for the very first time. Thanks to this very generous donation, the Hostos Community College Food Pantry is able to serve students and their families by providing them with food on a daily basis.”
