Greetings!
I'm so glad to be back in touch with you again. So much has happened since our last email, and there are so many virtual and in-person events I'm excited to share with you.
As we enter May - which is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, and Foster Care Awareness Month - I'm reminded of the many communities, experiences and stories that make up LA. This city is not just about one group of people or one narrative - it's about all of us, and the beautiful intersecting diversity that makes LA one of the most vibrant places in the world.
However, we know we can't take this diversity for granted. Every day, we are reminded of the fight we are in. From rising hate crimes to food deserts, COVID-19 inequities to the digital divide, racism and discrimination are on the rise in LA - so we must be too. We must stand together, marginalized communities and allies, shoulder to shoulder in the fight for accountability, empowerment and inclusion for all. This won't happen overnight, and progress does not come easy - but no matter what comes next, I am honored to stand with you in the work ahead.

Happy Asian Pacific American Heritage Month! |
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, or APAHM, and it gives us a chance to highlight the Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians that shape our world. The AAPI community is a central part of the LA story, from the city’s founding to shaping its future today. But today, AAPI Angelenos are facing a dramatic increase in discrimination, violence and hate - and we must oppose this hate in all its forms. Hate against one of us is a threat to all of us, and LA Civil Rights stands in support of all diverse communities and our right to feel safe and welcome in the City of Los Angeles. Welcome our new FUSE Fellow! |
We are so excited to welcome FUSE Corps fellow Ronnell Hampton to the LA Civil Rights team! A former Policy Manager at the Los Angeles Food Policy Council, Ronnell has extensive experience in racial, social, economic, & environmental justice. He will join LA Civil Rights to serve in our efforts for racial equity & community empowerment. Welcome, Ronnell!

Foster Care Awareness Month |
May is National Foster Care Month, a time to recognize that we can each play a part in enhancing the lives of children and youth in foster care. Since 1988, we recognize the challenges facing foster children and express gratitude to foster parents across the nation. At LA Civil Rights, we are working to uplift & empower all young people - especially those in underserved communities.

Last week, we hosted FORWARD TOGETHER, a live conversation on the civil unrest of 1992 and the lessons it holds for today's movement for racial justice. We welcomed leaders from the Korean American and African American community for this vital conversation, and are so thankful to our partners, KALFA, First AME, and Councilmember John Lee for joining us.

RECAP: Community Day of Service |
To kick-off Asian Pacific American Heritage Month on May2, we joined the Department of Public Works and dozens of city & community leaders for a community day of service in El Pueblo. Over 70 volunteers joined to beautify our neighborhoods. Missed out? You have another chance to join us! On Saturday, May 22, we will host another Community Day of Service in 6 neighborhoods across LA.
