Autumn in Michigan is lovely, and with this year’s wet spring, mild summer, and sunny fall days with cool nights, the leaves are busy making red, pink, and purple pigments. A most splendid fall color is coming.
The NAAAP Detroit leadership team and volunteers are busy preparing our annual Community Conversations to help you hone your individual strengths and voice. This year’s theme is “Discover YOUR Voice”. We are so excited to have Simon Tam joining us to share how he made his voice heard all the way to Supreme Court. And we are excited to have Abraham Jin, Jim Lee, and Allison Choi to help us develop and leverage our own signature voices. Our guest speakers are from California and Missouri. We will welcome them in Michigan historical Anderson Theatre in Henry Ford Museum, and the landmark Dearborn Inn Fairlane Ballroom. Thank you to our sponsors and volunteers for making this happen.
Simon Tam is an author, musician, activist, and self-proclaimed troublemaker. He wanted to change the world by creating an Asian American Band called the Slants. Little did he know, that the music would take him from the studio to the state penitentiary, and from the stage to the Supreme Court. Come hear his fascinating tale of how the worlds of civil rights and trademark law collided when an ordinary trademark application turned into an 8-year journey for self-identity and blurred the lines between art and activism. This deeply personal story tackles ideas of re-appropriation, ownership of identity, and how to create the world through art. I cried and over joyed when I heard him in Kansas City. His determination to defend the freedom of expression and win in the Matal v. Tam case in Supreme Court is a shining example for us all.
“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice… the arc doesn’t bend on its own. It takes courageous individuals willing to stand up for their rights for justice to be achieved.” To meet Simon Tam in person and hear him tell his remarkable story is a once in a lifetime opportunity you don’t want to miss.
We are also excited to have an exemplary panel from GiANT Worldwide to conduct a 5 Voices workshop for us. They are Abraham Jin, the CEO of Gin Consulting Group; Jim Lee, Senior Consultant of GiANT Worldwide; Allison Choi, HR Consultant of the Movember Foundation & Ambassador for GiANT Worldwide. This live workshop will shed light on how our upbringing affects how we handle ourselves and react to our surroundings. The 5 Voices Leadership framework is the code for unlocking your capacity to have honest conversations and build deeper, more authentic relationships with your teams, your families and your friends. Our panelists will help us discover, develop, and leverage our unique leadership voices.
