Last month, WIBA members were invited to attend candidate interviews for Mayor and City Council offices, hosted by the Wichita Area Builders Association. The elections are non-partisan. None of the candidates represent a political party.
WIBA is legally organized under a non-profit section of tax codes that prohibits us from officially “endorsing” candidates, although we can give qualified recommendations. We identify candidates who appear most qualified to serve and whose views appear generally favorable to the conduct of small businesses.
WIBA supports and recommends Jeff Longwell for Mayor. Longwell is a longtime member of WIBA, has continued that support while on the City Council and we believe is the best qualified candidate. He has been accessible and answerable for his actions.
District II – East Wichita is currently represented by Becky Tuttle, who was appointed to the position in January, 2019. In her time on the Council she has been active, following the issues and responsive to constituents. We support her candidacy for a full term.
District IV – Southwest Wichita is represented by Jeff Blubaugh, who was elected to the Council in 2015. Blubaugh is an active member of the Council and represents this diverse district well. We support his candidacy.
District V – Northwest Wichita is currently held by Bryan Frye, a marketing executive who has been active in the community for many years. He has served well on the Council and we support his candidacy.
Local government has been relatively conflict-free in recent years, while generally meeting our needs. We feel that the current office holders are doing what we elected them to do and we recommend their re-election.
