Palm Beach Illustrated selected Laura Vernon, Ph.D., associate dean of academic affairs and research of the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at Florida Atlantic University as a finalist for the Educator of the Year award. She is featured in an article and on the cover of Palm Beach Illustrated's September Magazine. Palm Beach Illustrated’s Education Awards recognizes individuals and organizations making an impact on education in the Palm Beaches. The annual awards program will be held Friday, September 20 at the Norton Museum of Art.
College of Education at Jupiter Welcomes Taka Mays, Ed.D. 
Taka Mays. Ed.D., is a Clinical Instructor at Florida Atlantic University in the Department of Educational Leadership and Research Methodology. Prior to Dr. Mays’ employment at FAU, she was an elementary school principal for the last 10 years in Tallahassee, Florida. In addition to her role as a Clinical Instructor, she will be working with teachers from St. Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee counties who are enrolled in FAU’s School Leaders Master’s Partnership Program and aspiring to become school administrators. Dr. Mays’ research interests are school leadership, school accountability and culturally responsive pedagogy.
New this fall is the “Owl Spirit Fridays,” initiative. Every Friday – not just during football season – all faculty, staff and students are encouraged to wear business casual dress, that includes FAU red and blue, or FAU-branded attire. Click here for more information.
 
Community Spotlight
Dozens of people stopped by our table to learn about FAU Jupiter and FAU Brain Institute Ascend Program's offerings during the  Summer Concert Series at Abacoa, featuring the Sinatra Salute on August 17. The concert provides an excellent opportunity for us to showcase what we have to offer at FAU Jupiter. The next Abacoa Summer Concert will be held Saturday,September 21, feating Crystal Visions of Fleetwood Mac. FAU Jupiter is a proud sponsor of the Abacoa Summer Concert Series. 
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
This fall Taylor Hagood, Ph.D., professor of American Literature at Florida Atlantic University will be teaching a four-week course titled, "The Gilded Age." The course will begin Wednesday, November 13 at 2:15 p.m. This course will examine the great forgers of that wealth along with the writers, artists and composers both in the United States and abroad who helped shape the Zeitgiest of that time. Prominent figures who make an appearance in this four-lecture series include Henry Flagler, Winslow Homer, Henry James, John D. Rockefeller, Edith Wharton and John Phillip Sousa.

The John D. MacArthur Campus presently enrolls more than 1,500 students and offers groundbreaking programs in research and education.
