A diverse body of high-achieving students moved into the FAU Jupiter campus this week. With the dorms at capacity, about 30 students are being accommodated at the Courtyard by Marriott. The incoming FAU Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College Fall class of 2019 includes 11 National Merit Finalists. Since 2000, 28 National Merit Finalists have attended the College. The average GPA for the incoming 2019 class is 4.16. The average SAT score is 1300, and the average ACT score is 28.8. Approximately 25% are the first in their family to attend college, and 62% are from underrepresented groups.
Using deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI), scientists from Florida Atlantic University’s Machine Perception and Cognitive Robotics Laboratory ( MPCR) in the Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science are bringing to life a rare four-legged seeing and hearing intelligent quadraped robodog. Meet Astro. FAU Brain Institute member Elan Barenholtz, Ph.D., an associate professor in FAU’s Department of Psychology and co-director of FAU’s MPCR laboratory is among the team of brains behind Astro.
The Accelerated Induction into Teaching (AIT) program is beginning its 17th year at FAU. AIT is a unique student teaching opportunity in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education. AIT is a collaboration between FAU and local school districts where AIT Student Teachers serve as full-time teachers during their final semester.
“The Department of Teaching and Learning is proud to continue to serve our partner counties with 18 AIT Student Teachers hired in for fall 2019 in Palm Beach, Martin, and St. Lucie Counties,” said Ernest Brewer, Ed.D., an assistant professor in FAU's Department of Teaching and Learning.

AIT student teachers have complete responsibility for their classrooms and are supported by a university supervisor and a retired educator who serves as a master mentor.
Faculty Spotlight
Scientific research often tweaks existing theories in small ways. Occasionally, research reveals something entirely new and ignites a theoretical revolution in its field. Ning Quan, Ph.D., who recently joined FAU as a professor of biomedical science in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and member of the FAU Brain Institute works at the forefront of just such a revolution; his world-renowned studies of inflammation are helping to change how scientists understand the relationship between the central nervous system and the immune system.

Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine celebrated its ninth White Coat Ceremony to welcome its newest medical students during this symbolic event officially. Abhimanyu Ahuja, Jamshed Desai, and Sravya Gurivireddygari are the newest Wilkes Medical Scholars, FAU’s competitive early admission program, which offers conditional admission to medical school as well as an enriched education at Wilkes Honors College. The White Coat Ceremony is a symbolic rite of passage celebrated at medical schools across the nation, which welcomes new students to the practice of medicine while elevating the value of humanism as the core of healthcare.
2019 Summer Science Scholarship
FAU Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College students Heather Butler, Karla Holt, and Pierce Herrmann presented their research at Scripps Research Institute, Friday, Aug. 9th, during the annual summer research program poster session. These students are among the ten recipients of the 2019 Summer Science Scholarship. This summer $22,000 in scholarships were awarded to ten students in support of student research on the Jupiter campus.
FAU Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) awardees Gabrielle Byrd, Hope Wiersma, Claudia Villasmil and Alyssa Payne presented their projects during the FAU Undergraduate Research and Inquiry (OURI) 7th Annual Summer Retreat on August 15. SURF projects are ten-week, intensive summer immersion research experiences for FAU undergraduate students. Each SURF award allocates $4,000 in support of each chosen project.
Students in FAU's Academy for Community Inclusion recently hosted their 3rd annual summer picnic. Students utilized the skills they learned during the Residential Experience course to plan this event. Thank you to all of the students, staff and faculty who participated.
On August 6th, four Academy for Community Inclusion (ACI) ACI students graduated alongside their peers from the College of Education. ACI is a higher education program for students with intellectual disabilities. Congratulations to Deanna, Jeremy, Marina, Robyn and service dogs Roxy and Clay.
