A new study, published in the  American Journal of Audiology is the first to examine the relationship between parental mental illness such as anxiety, depression and anger in childhood and the risk of suicidal and self-harm ideations in adults who suffer from these debilitating hearing disorders.
“If the history of parental mental illness in childhood significantly increases the risk of self-harm-then it would be important to screen for them in order to make timely onward referrals to mental health services,” said the studies co-author, Ali Danesh, Ph.D., a member of FAU’s Brain Institute.
Frontiers for Young Minds recently published an article written by Alexandra Paz, a second-year Integrative Biology and Neuroscience (IBAN) student at FAU Jupiter. "What Can a Blind Fish Teach Us About Sleep?" explores the various experiments that can be conducted using cavefish and why these experiments might be useful for humans. Students from the Explora Science Center and Children's Museum reviewed the article. Paz and Alex Keene, an associate professor of biological sciences in FAU's  Charles E. Schmidt College of Science then were able to address the reviews. The journal allows young students to learn directly from the scientists that are conducting the research.
Florida Speaker pro tempore, MaryLynn Magar recently joined FAU Brain Institute Executive Director, Randy Blakely, Ph.D. for a tour of the new Journey Through the Human Brain exhibit at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. Donor and community support of FAU is helping to bring STEM education to students and parents throughout our region.
Faculty and staff, you are invited! Come out and help us welcome the new Freshmen students as they move into the Residence Halls! FAU is looking for volunteers to help students and their families move items into their rooms on Wednesday, August 14 from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
If lifting a heavy box or carrying a TV is not something you’re comfortable with, you can also help at one of our volunteer stations. There you can assist with other critical tasks, such as handing out water, monitoring elevator usage, and directing people where to go.

Thank you in advance for your support of our new OWLs. If you would like to volunteer some time, please sign-up  here!
