Marx Library delivers a Semester of Kindness
The PR Committee used Fall 2019 to initiate a Semester of Kindness, through Marx Library planned activities and displays to encourage students, faculty, and the rest of the South Alabama community to reflect on the importance of practicing kindness, empathy, and compassion toward others. For example, on the 9/11 Day of Service, the library collected notes of kindness for military troops and first responders, including police officers, EMS workers, and firefighters. We collected 74 notes, which were distributed by Karen Peterson's service-learning classes to the appropriate groups. The USA Police displayed their notes on their Board of Courage.
The library organized a similar project for Veterans Day, collecting notes to be displayed at the opening of the Biomedical Library’s Veterans Resource Room. Students were also encouraged to submit words of encouragement and kindness to be displayed in the library. By the end of the semester, we had collected 213 notes, which were posted throughout the library. Finally, we organized a food drive for JagPantry, which received 331 donations. Several students commented on the positive atmosphere fostered by the Semester of Kindness.

Excelsior Band Exhibit at the McCall Library
"In Celebration: Mobile's Excelsior Band" is an exhibit exploring the history of one of Mobile's most venerable institutions. Founded in 1883 to celebrate the birth of founder John A. Pope's son, the band continues its carnival tradition by leading parades and performing Dixieland and Jazz standards as a ten-piece marching brass band. The exhibit offers insight into the perspectives of the people behind the instruments in their own words.
Visit the exhibit on the 3rd Floor Hallway of the Marx Library until the end of February 2020

Joseph Bloch Traveling Public History Exhibit Ends its Tour of the Region
The grant funded project
Joseph Bloch: Father of Mobile's Music has ended its successful 18-month run. The exhibit was a collaboration between USA Librarians Deborah Gurt and Paula Webb and History Prof. David Meola. The display traveled to eight venues in Alabama and Mississippi and was seen by thousands of viewers. Highlights of the project include: three short articles published, a lecture-performance by USA School of Music Faculty of some of Bloch's music, and a public display at the Southern Jewish Historical Society conference in 2018.
The project team is grateful for the support of the University Libraries, USA Seed Grants in Support of Arts and Humanities, and the Southern Jewish Historical Society.
